Where to buy Apple devices in Thailand

» Buying Apple devices is considerably easier than it used to be. Years ago, Macs (there were no iPads or iPhones of course) were only used by a small number of people in Thailand, but in recent years prices have gone down, there are more devices and the number of potential customers here has risen considerably. I taught a class of computer engineering students recently and saw that more than 80% of the computers were Macs, with a couple of iPads as well. Some of those Macs were running Windows as well as OS X. A while back, Walt Mossberg called the iMac the best PC ever reviewed.

» Since I first started using Macs, the Apple world I work in has changed somewhat, even in Thailand where there are far more stores than before: iBeat, iStore and uStore, as well as other outlets such as in Power Mall and many of the main department stores.

» If teachers never learn anything new, they do a disservice to their students. Likewise, writers should always search for new ideas; inflexibility will not stimulate readers. My recent look at Microsoft Office 2011 has been a nice surprise - I find myself not only liking it, but happy to recommend it to Mac users. For those wondering about changing from other platforms to Apple's OS X, this would make the move relatively painless. The difference in style sometimes confuses those new to Macs (http://www.microsoft.com/mac).

» The eXtensions column has not been particularly pro-Microsoft over the years. My students think I hate Bill Gates. Although that is untrue, I do maintain the fiction in class. Some of my colleagues would not change from Redmond's offerings, and for sound reasons.

» This is my third look at iLife '11, which includes GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb. Although iTunes is a part of iLife and it integrates with the other parts, it is installed and updated separately, because of its functions as a conduit for online services and synchronising of iOS devices, like the iPhone.

The iPhone 4: So far, so good

» I have had the new iPhone 4 in my hands for just over a week and have been getting used to its new features and superior performance. The iPhone 3G that I have been using for some 18 months now has served me well. While the white back has a somewhat matte finish these days, the glass is as clear and unmarked as the day it came out of the box. Instead of an expensive case, I just use an iPod sock, which the staff at iStudio found amusing. It works for me.

iPhone 4: A Surprise Purchase

» I did not think I would be writing this column as, despite registering early with Dtac and already having my name on a True iPhone, I was not invited to any events; nor was I surprised by a smiling delivery-man with a shiny new iPhone 4. Speculation on Twitter and Facebook (how we rely on these nowadays) suggested that 18,000 of the devices went to Dtac, 43,000 to True and 20,000 to another carrier. These figures are unsubstantiated; but whatever the real figure, I confirm I did not get one in the release euphoria.

Choices concerning a dead MacBook Pro

» Problems with my 15" MacBook Pro began in late July. After four months of perfect behaviour, it began to freeze intermittently. Despite several attempts at repair, and a couple of glimmers of false hope, it finally died on me in the middle of August. I covered it in bubblewrap, took it to my office and waited for it to be collected. Two weeks have passed and it is still there. I am considering my options, both for the long term and the short term.
