    Tonality: A bright solution

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 13/08/2014

» I use Aperture on my Macs for several tasks connected with photography, but with the announced end of development for the application, many users are expected to move to Adobe's Lightroom, another workflow application popular among photographers. Like Aperture, it helps organise images as they are imported and allows a certain amount of editing.

MacBooks top of the class at English camp

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 06/08/2014

» I am currently running a two-week, intensive English camp for students at Mahidol University's Faculty of Engineering. I put this together over the summer break, with a lot of help from my friends, with an eye to the imminent launch of the AEC (Asean Economic Community) and as a way to help some of my students improve their English communication skills.

Preparations for the update to OS X 10.10, Yosemite

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 30/07/2014

» There was a small surprise last week when Apple released the public beta of OS X 10.10, Yosemite. Cupertino had announced this was to be in August, but testing appears to be going well. The public beta will produce feedback from more users, which should help improve OS X. However, there is no real expectation at the moment that the predicted mid-September release of Yosemite will be changed. This may not be at exactly the same time as the iOS 8 release apparently, even though some features need components of both to work.

    Apple finances and Yosemite expectations

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 23/07/2014

» By the time you read this, Apple will have announced its third-quarter financial results (last night in fact). Predictions suggest that something like 30 to 40 million iPhones will have been sold. Mac sales were expected to be a little under 4 million, slightly lower than before, but at a time when PC sales are slipping worldwide. There are also the invisibles, like iTunes sales, which are usually in excess of $4 billion for the quarter.

    Investing in limited-edition digital art

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 09/07/2014

» There has been a great merging of media over the last few years. Many articles or books are now only available in digital format, but the ownership of digital art is a fairly new concept with exciting possibilities. With the devices I have — and the use of some interesting iOS apps — I can view digital art as well as other content on my large television screen.

iPhone video — slowing things down, speeding things up

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 18/06/2014

» The last time I watched a football match was the World Cup final in 1966. I far prefer motor racing — four wheels and two. My satellite TV link usually has two channels that show MotoGP, but one has a poor picture and on the other they have not yet learned how to balance ambient noise with commentary.

Some excellent apps for photography on the iPhone

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 23/04/2014

» The announcement of the iPhone launch in January 2007 was a game-changing event. I was there and was able to handle a pre-production model the very next day. It was dismissed as irrelevant then, and some still belittle it when they can.

    Mother's little helpers

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 09/04/2014

» There are several ways to navigate quickly round OS X, starting at the bottom of the screen with the Dock. This displays icons of several applications including any currently open, plus some minimised documents or browser pages. With the cursor over a Dock icon, click and hold opens a menu in a black frame with options for the file or application. These differ if the application is running or not.

    Big Macs and size

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 19/03/2014

» First, a correction. When discussing my stolen Mac two weeks ago, I called it a PowerMac. It was in fact a 12-inch G4 Powerbook. I had big Macs on the brain as I had been looking at Apple’s latest Mac Pro which has just arrived in Bangkok.

The iBeacon and mobile devices: coming soon to a store near you

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/03/2014

» As long as I can remember, my mother has organised her life by writing lists. I tend to be a bit more random, but do need to be reminded of things from time to time. With the Mac I can use the Reminders utility and set up a specific location for an alarm. This is synchronised to the iPhone, so when I arrive at work, there is a reminder for something I need to do.
