Wrong election forecasts a lesson for pollsters

Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 05/03/2013

» To err is human. But to err on the scale of the wrong predictions made for the Bangkok governor’s election by all but one of the major pollsters is not just an embarrassment, it's a disaster for their credibility.

A greener Bangkok will take a real commitment

News, Published on 03/03/2013

» Today people across the city go to the polls to endorse one of the more than 20 Bangkok governor candidates, making their choices based on a wide variety of criteria. But one thing almost all voters would probably agree on is that they don't really expect many of the promises made in the long election campaign to become reality. At the top of the list of perennial promises is to make Bangkok "green". A lack of continuity is partly to blame, whether within the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or the national government. Whenever a new team enters it takes time to take concrete steps to implement green schemes. Ambitious projects are usually either forgotten or never get much past the blueprints. Meanwhile, projects started under the old administration usually either languish or are dismantled altogether.

Vote to make a difference

News, Published on 02/03/2013

» When a reporter approached a vendor this week and asked for her views on the Bangkok governor election, she responded by saying she wasn't expecting anything to change and was fed up with the topic. While such feelings are understandable given the lack of charisma and exaggerated policy platforms of most of the candidates, eligible voters must turn out in force at the polls tomorrow if there is to be a meaningful result. Yes, it can be a tough choice for those not voting along party lines but democracy has always been about challenge and the issues in municipal elections rarely change.

In search of a new 'magic eye'

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 28/02/2013

» "Magic Eye", back in the 1980s everyone knew how to sing the song: "ah-ah yaa ting ka-ya" or "no-no don’t throw the trash". We sang it and we lived it. Have trash in your hand? Better throw it in the bin, not on the street. Magic Eye is watching!

Reality checks on candidates

News, Published on 22/02/2013

» It was inconvenient to many of the candidates, but the invasion of expert opinion into the race for Bangkok governor managed to lay down a few facts about campaign fudging. Three men who actually know about the subject recently challenged the three men who lead the polls for the March 3 election. The result was a careful and realistic look at the promises on the campaign trail, particularly for traffic and transport. Voters should heed their statements before they head for the polls.
