    Totally crazy

    Database, Published on 18/08/2010

» The Magnificent Seven said sorry, but it forgot to announce some extra stipulations it will put into the third generation (3G) phone bidding that may (or may not) take place in the foreseeable future; any firm winning one of the three 3G licences will of course have to pay somewhere around 12 billion baht, according to estimates by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). But in a whoops-moment, commissioner Suranant Wongwittayakamchorn suddenly remembered that each of them will have to offer free Internet access with 2Mbps lines to 15,000 rural schools for five years; ironically, that is something Samart Corp could do more easily than the Number 1 and Number 1 yuppiephone firms, Advanced Info Service and Dtac, neither of which is an Internet provider.

    • banmebkk commented : Taiwan Semiconductor Factory online. The only way Thailand might have one will be due to foreign investment from either a Taiwanese or Korean company. In order to be able to support such a facility, the management personnel will need a high level of education. Sadly Thailand only has a handful of talent that can manage this type of factory, not to mention the workers. This is why those factories are still in Taiwan, South Korea, China, and other first world countries (yes, China is not first world but its go the skills and brains). Companies in this field don't necessary benefit from the low wages that Thailand has to offer, skills and education comes first.

A Mini adventure on the Mac

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 11/08/2010

» I have been running the latest Mac Mini in my home and at my office for the past few days and in this time have reminded myself of what a useful computer this is. I resisted the adjective, "little" in that last sentence as that demeans the device. Compact is more to the point. As with the previous versions, its dimensions give a user flexibility with regard to location.

    Blowing it all, almost

    Database, Published on 11/08/2010

» Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd fuelled one of the year's best stories in technology, with a low-life achievement of the non-technology type; he faked expense accounts and acknowledged sexual harassment - but not actual relations - with an employee; Hurd make his reputation as an incredibly good CEO who took HP back to the top in almost all fields, and then the married father of two blew it all; well, make that "almost all" and only including the reputation; Hurd will have to struggle along on the $28 million "golden parachute" deal he got by resigning - $12.2 million in severance pay and 350,000 shares of HP stock, in all just a little short of 900 million baht; of course some of that will go towards what the smarmy ex-CEO called a "settlement" with the woman he harassed, who in turn said nice things about how surprised and saddened she was that Hurd was dumped from HP.

    Unclear threats

    Database, Published on 04/08/2010

» The third anniversary of the Computer Crime Act was sadder and more pessimistic than the second, which was less optimistic and more unhappy than the first; in the words of media activist Supinya Klangnarong, even trying to push for change of the draconian measure would only "change it in the opposite direction"; at a time even the previous champion of free expression Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has decided to support the witch-hunt known as "online scout project", it is clear that computer crimes now are synonymous with political and thought crimes; Thai Netizen Network member Sarinee Achawanantakul said that use of the bill on national security measures was vague, and he called on authorities to at least define what such threats actually are; missing from the criticism entirely is the loyal opposition; it appears clear that both the Puea Thai party of the red and the New Politics Party of the yellow want to hold the same power over the Internet that Mr Abhisit and the Democrat-led coalition have revelled in, with 115,000 websites banned and numerous arrests and intimidating interrogations of political opponents and other "security threats".
