Shame on Democrats

News, Postbag, Published on 28/05/2019

» All the ambivalence and paradoxes of recent Thai politics cannot be conceived of as linear processes, as Thais are confronted with a consolidation of the power constellation and the democratisation of powerlessness.

Just the way it is...

News, Postbag, Published on 27/05/2019

» The headline on the March 26 Sunday editorial, "Politicians must put public first", caught my eye. "The interruption gave the impression that some politicians are still self-serving, rather than serving both their voters and their country. This is unfortunate." It may indeed be unfortunate, but self-serving politicians are a Thai political reality, a way of life, and no amount of rhetoric, public or private, will ever bring this practice to an end.

Vox regimen

» Re: "Majority disagree with EC endorsement of party MPs: Suan Dusit poll", (BP, May 12). A popular Latin maxim goes, "Vox populi, vox Dei," or "The voice of the people is the voice of God" and this is why countries hold elections.

Melodramatic rants

News, Postbag, Published on 08/05/2019

» Vint Chavala makes one of his customary melodramatic rants in "Poisonous billionaires", (PostBag, May 4), this time against "many billionaires", one presumably being Mr Thanathorn. Democratic justice

News, Postbag, Published on 13/04/2019

» I wish to thank the 12 diplomats and their respective democratic countries for finally supporting the Thai people. Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai's comment, "It's an intervention in our justice system" is a joke. Without a truly democratically elected government there is no justice.

A step forward

News, Postbag, Published on 11/04/2019

» Re: "FM's outburst", (BP, April 10). I could understand Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai's outburst at the diplomatic saga which took place at Pathumwan police station where 12 diplomats from the EU, UN and Western embassies were present to observe the sedition proceedings against Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, Future Forward Party leader. But I have two observations:

Win-win goals

Army always rules

News, Published on 08/04/2019

» Re: "Old guard can't halt the turning tide", (Opinion, April 6). Wasant Techawongtham argues succinctly that Thai elites won't be more successful than King Canute in turning back a potential and youthful democratic wave.
