    Microsoft gets pushy, draws flak

Life, James Hein, Published on 11/11/2015

» Microsoft has been criticised for being overly pushy with Windows 10 upgrades. Some users reported that the upgrade request had been checked even though they didn't do so, indicating that something else did it for them. Microsoft claims this is a mistake, for the moment at least. Next year the situation will change as it will be part of the "recommended" update process. If you have automatic updates turned on with the important and recommended ones checked, then sometime next year Windows 10 will be downloaded and installed on your machine. If you were wondering, "auto-download" with this option is the default setting on most Windows installations. The first the user will know about this is when they see the reboot into Windows 10 message after the update has been applied.

Who's really sending me these emails?

Life, James Hein, Published on 28/10/2015

» A while back I wrote to Samsung outlining my concerns, validated by low sales and a move to iPhones, about the latest S6 and Note 5 devices moving closer to Apple in functionality. In particular they removed waterproofing, included a fixed battery and stopped support for a microSD memory expansion. It has been some weeks and so far no response.

Canon is zooming to the top spot

Life, James Hein, Published on 23/09/2015

» I have been thinking about the new 250MP CMOS sensor from Canon that can capture up to 19,580 x 12,600 pixels or around 420 or so of the highest resolution and uncompressed shots on a 128GB card. This is still over 11 rolls of the old film and of course with memory cards larger than 128GB already available it isn't really a limitation. My thinking was more along the lines of, with this kind of resolution, whether there would be a need for a zoom lens anymore.

If you're appy and you know it

Life, James Hein, Published on 09/09/2015

» A common phrase these days is "there is an app for that". I have had the need for some fairly specific apps lately and I have also had one or two recommended to me that have worked out well.

    Samsung: Wannabe Apple Corp

Life, James Hein, Published on 26/08/2015

» I recently spent a week roughly south of Buri Ram in the Northeast. I was far enough away that my AIS SIM could not reliably pick up data and it was an interesting feeling to be disconnected for such a time. There are now apparently psychological conditions being defined for those who feel a lack of continuous connectivity but for my part at least it was a short enough time to be a novel experience. It did highlight just how much those who are part of the modern world rely on connectivity for news and contact. When I was younger we thought nothing of waiting a few weeks for a reply to a written letter. These days some feel put out if they don’t get a reply within a few seconds.

    In the right domain

Life, James Hein, Published on 29/07/2015

» How important is picking the right website name or URL? I have been involved in the website selection process a number of times and it is an interesting exercise. If, for example, you have a company name like Dritzz then you are probably not going to have many problems finding a domain like www.dritzz.com, which incidentally currently does not exist.

    Groupthink is so Orwellian

Life, James Hein, Published on 22/07/2015

» I have been using the internet since it first became public. In the early days the main aim was basic communication and the sharing of information. It was actually a lot easier to find information quickly back then because the groups and sites tended to be highly focused. Discussion groups were often moderated and if you strayed too far from the central theme of the group you were encouraged to look elsewhere.

    Facebook stalking; hijacked smartphones

Life, James Hein, Published on 24/06/2015

» I am not a big social media user. I keep my profiles trim and any pictures to a minimum. I don't like Twitter at all for various reasons and I find most of the users of Tumblr focused on social engineering directions I don't agree with. All of that aside then, there is Facebook. Like many others I use Facebook to connect to people I have lost touch with, such as old high school friends whom I have no way of tracking down. In my case my Goodreads account is linked to Facebook to let people know what I am reading or have read. If you like reading and haven't tried it then take a look at www.goodreads.com. For me it also a great way to track what I have read and haven't in, say, a series I like.

    Entering the darkness

Life, James Hein, Published on 03/06/2015

» You may have heard of the terms "Dark Web" or "Deep Web", then again you may not have. First of all these two terms refer to different things. The first is a series of websites that provide illegal services, such as ordering drugs, and a range of other things typically purchased using Bitcoins. The second refers to all the unindexed sites that exist across the World Wide Web. According to some reports, Google indexes about 16% of the internet, leaving the majority of sites not findable through most search engines.

Need a new phone? Put it on hold

Life, James Hein, Published on 06/05/2015

» So how do you pick a new mobile phone these days? There are hundreds of models to choose from in every price bracket, and with China starting to mass produce smartphones the country is hitting a price point about half that of the big names such as Apple, Samsung and HTC. Xiaomi, for example, has a new model coming out with a 20MP camera and lots of other top end features for a very reasonable price. I suspect it will shake up the order at the top of the stack in the near future. Huawei is another Chinese contender releasing its new P8 range in a few months time, with rumours that one model will be like the Russian Yota2 and have an eInk based screen on the back. The release will include thin and powerful models, though at this stage not with the same screen resolution as, say, the Samsung S6, but at a lower price point.
