Saiyud proves military and democracy compatible
News, Philip J Cunningham, Published on 17/03/2016
» At this very moment, we need no further proof to realise that military men and democracy are always on the opposite side. Yet every rule has an exception.

The big issue: The dirty dozen (plus 5,988)
Alan Dawson, Published on 13/03/2016
» The government has spent months compiling the list. Now, it's going after every one of the 6,000 "influential criminal figures" on it, if it takes the rest of their days in power. And they say it will.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
News, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 25/02/2016
» I wonder if People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) protesters must, in one way or another, take responsibility for where we are now as a country, nearly two years under the military regime. This is if you care to look at the situation, out of curiosity and an attempt at straightforward reasoning, rather than vengefulness.

Liberalise lease laws
News, Postbag, Published on 29/01/2016
» An argument often heard in Thailand is that to extend leases or grant ownership rights to foreigners would betray sensitivity to the history of colonisation in Southeast Asia. But Thailand has not been subject to colonisation and is seldom seen to be overly sensitive to its neighbours' problems or transgressions, unless they directly impact the kingdom.

Between authoritarianism and democracy
News, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 22/01/2016
» So far in the 21st century, political fortunes in Southeast Asian states have been mixed. As the world's only region that harbours all political regimes from absolutism in Brunei and authoritarianism in Thailand to thriving democracy in Indonesia and communist one-party rule in Vietnam, Southeast Asia's political future will likely be sandwiched between a rule by the few and government by the majority. The determinant of future regime pathways in this region may well be the performance of China on one hand and India and Japan on the other, the largest and most consequent major powers in the neighbourhood.

Fed up power base forces PM to repent

Our next leader will have to fix economy
News, Editorial, Published on 17/01/2016
» Next year’s election, should it go ahead as planned, is shaping up as a good one to lose. Any incoming government will have the interesting task of navigating unchartered constitutional waters, with a senate most likely appointed by unconventional means and restrictions over who can become prime minister and how long they can serve. But while the constitutional drafting process and referendum is rightly getting much attention in political circles, there will perhaps be an even more daunting prospect facing those who seek and win office when the army yields the floor: fixing the economy.
