    Private matters

    Database, Published on 03/03/2010

» Google sent its best PR people out to tell the media that it was "taken aback" by complaints and a raft of media stories about how Google Buzz had severe privacy issues; the problem, the spin doctors said, was that Buzz was tested inside Google before being foisted on the public at large, and people working at Google didn't seem to mind that the new social network set them up with a group of people to follow and be followed by - presumably because most of them knew each other, or close to it; even the PR mavens seemed hugely unaware that much of the digital world is already sceptical about Google's actions and intentions, since it never provides a clue what it does with the vast amount of information it already has accumulated.

    Internet site of the week

    Gotfried. K, Published on 24/02/2010

» My friend Marty Salin sent in this week's Internet Site of the Week. He says, ``Onelook.com offers a dictionary search better than Google's. As a writer, I often have to look words up. For years, Onelook.com has been my go-to tool. Whenever I need to look up a word, I use Onelook to directly search dozens of dictionaries, both plain English and specialised. The results page links directly to the entry I looked up in each dictionary, and getting multiple definitions is just a matter of Ctrl-clicking each of my favourite dictionaries to open them up in new tabs.

» I've recently spent a few weeks playing around with Twitter. No doubt you've heard about it and maybe you're wondering what it's all about. Maybe you already know what it's all about - in that case, I think you'll find my opinion of it is rather different.

» You no doubt have much greater insight into interpreting readers' questions, but with respect to the "Video Won't Play" problem, couldn't he just drag the file to vlan? At least to see if it would play, no messing around with playlists. He should certainly try another file.

    Who's next?

    Database, Published on 24/02/2010

» Is Thailand next? Google said it will stop censoring for the Chinese government Real Soon Now, and last week told the Australian Censor Board to pound sand when the Ozzies asked Google to please censor YouTube videos from their "refused classification" bin; pretty much under the radar, Google has been happy to censor on behalf of the Thai government as well, since a previous administration cut off access to YouTube over a royal insult.

    Busybody Buzz

    Database, Published on 24/02/2010

» Every so often, a new product from the hugely fertile Google gets a lot of press, some of it bad, and that's what happened with a Google Mail feature called Buzz; it's a social network tool allowing users to share photos, videos, chit-chat, insults and updates, sort of like Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, hi5 and several dozens of others; the initial offering showed every user every other user's contacts, setting off privacy alarms; the main feature is that each user can link to spots on other networks such as YouTube or Flickr, which then are automatically added as updates in Google Buzz.
