» Spain's largest hotel company, Meliá, has made forays into the Thai market and has converted The Imperial Boathouse in Koh Samui to become their new flagship resort in Thailand. They plan to open Meliá hotels in Chiang Mai in 2021 and in Bangkok on Sukhumvit 15 and in Bang-Na.

    Surround yourself by nature

» Winter isn't coming. It has arrived and what better way to embrace it than setting off for the North. It is the time of year when most of us urban concrete jungle dwellers head for cooler temperatures, where we can climb hills and trek mountains without breaking out into too much of a sweat. To get a head-start on this, I chose Canary Natural Resort in Chiang Rai for a weekend getaway.

    Journey to peace

» Vietnam has always been a bit of a struggle to get to, with its visa restrictions and limited air connectivity. This has since changed with online e-visas and with the introduction of Bangkok Airways' flights to Nha Trang. This has also made it easier to get to Amanoi, derived from the Sanskrit word for peace, aman, and the Vietnamese word for place, no'i. Aman's first resort in Vietnam is perched over Vinh Hy Bay, where a nature park tumbles into crystal-clear waters. This secluded retreat is for those seeking serenity, though not without a bit of adventure.

» Twenty-five minutes from Phuket International and Domestic Airport lies Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort on the serene beach of Bang Tao. Located between the azure Andaman Sea and a tropical lagoon, Outrigger is Laguna Beach's only resort which has three swimming pools, including Phuket's longest water slide, a wedding studio, water sports and beach activities, plus four tennis courts, a squash court, an archery centre, a fitness centre and my favourite, a vegetable and herb garden. And that's not all… room sizes begin at 43m2!

» In his pursuit for authenticity, chef Luke Farrell has created a 'living library' of his own. Ryewater Nursey in Dorset, the UK, is the labour of Farrell's love for all things Asian, especially ingredients. On his family's 40-hectare property, the chef-turned-farmer is growing Asian produce, which he supplies to top London restaurants. Using seeds and cuttings brought from his travels in Asia, Farrell is growing, in greenhouses, fresh organic herbs, spices and vegetables, pollinated by his father's tropical butterflies. Guru speaks to Farrell about his growing obsession with Asian ingredients.

    Secluded luxury

» Over-crowded Phuket is increasingly becoming the least of my favourite holiday islands. However, to get away from the tourists (the irony doesn't fail me either) I often choose the furthest tip of the island. Having been a fan of Cape Panwa for a while, it was time to try out its neighbour Sri Panwa. Not really a resort to enjoy the beach, Sri Panwa more than makes up with the view.

» At Phuket airport, all roads lead right. However, travel off the beaten path, turn left (and keep going), cross over the sea on a bridge with a spectacular view and you're in beautiful Phang-Nga Bay. After a pleasant 20-minute drive along the coast, you reach Baba Beach Club. Bang on the serene and extremely clean Natai Beach, Baba Beach Club, part of the Sri Panwa family, is as advertised.

» Luxury is often unassociated with eco-friendliness. That is not the case in Cambodia. At the Royal Sands Koh Rong, an hour off the coast of Sihanoukville, the environment is of prime concern, even before the resort was built.
