» It was with a feeling of nausea and disgust that Chiang Mai-based artist Mit Jai Inn spent one month working on his new series of abstract paintings, now on display and part of the exhibition "Wett" at Gallery Ver at N22 in Bangkok. Mit's series is entitled "Junta Monochrome" -- obviously not for the works themselves -- for the art space has exploded with every colour imaginable; rather the title conveys the artist's contempt for the reality outside: a junta-ruled country where things are either black or white, where if you're not a khon dee (good person), the artist says, you are inevitably the bad guy.

Tonight, he's cooking for 120 guests -- international collectors, curators, designers, press and friends -- at The Pier Studios in Chai Wan, Hong Kong, as part of a fundraising for The Land Foundation, which Rirkrit and Kamin Lertchaiprasert founded in 2004.

» In The Jam Factory Gallery's current exhibition "Asylum Seeker: The Pond And The Fireflies", artist Prapat Jiwarangsan himself is the asylum seeker, and the pond in question is actually around the house in Chiang Mai in which he took refuge after the 2014 coup. The show is comprised of a video installation, two series of photographs and a few ink-written letters.

Just like how the same crowd made it the week before to the opening of Bangkok Citycity Gallery's hit show by director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, and just like they will this weekend head to MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum's inaugural show "The Serenity Of Madness" in Chiang Mai, the first retrospective of Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

A circle of abstraction

» Currently standing at the centre of Gallery Ver is one half of a table tennis table folded up, and it has come to embody the essence of the artist Udomsak Krisanamis's latest solo show "Paint It Black". On it are layers of gauze and circling strokes of black paint, plus a wasp's nest. The insect's lodge wasn't the artist's plan but he kept it anyway.
