The 12 boys and coach were found and then broadcast on video to the nation by skilled and tenacious divers who refused to take a step or stroke backwards for 10 agonising days. They are heroes. So are the hundreds, Thai and foreigner, who supported them directly, as are the thousands who backed them actively.

    Careless and deadly

    News, Editorial, Published on 11/07/2018

» Monday's flight schedule of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha tells a tale about the nation. First, he flew to Phuket because of last week's tragic seaborne events. He spoke with hospitalised survivors of two dive boat accidents, and comforted Chinese relatives of some of the 42 known dead and 10 missing. Then he flew to Chiang Rai, where he observed rescue operations at the Tham Luang cave face in Mae Sai district. Following that he visited the eight children who had been extracted and taken to Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital.

    Good sports, bad sports

    News, Editorial, Published on 07/02/2018

» The Winter Olympic Games begin on Friday at Pyeongchang in eastern South Korea. There has been plenty of good news around this biennial, international gathering. Thailand will have four competitors in the skiing competition. That puts the emphasis on the Olympics as an event of peace and participation, as well as competition. Unexpectedly, North Korea decided at the last moment to join and to participate in the Pyeongchang Games.

    Somyot in very hot water

    Oped, Editorial, Published on 09/02/2018

» Based on his media interviews, ex-national police chief Somyot Poompunmuang’s explanation about a 300-million-baht loan he claimed he received from the owner of Victoria’s Secret Massage parlour seems pretty shameless. And unfortunately, it has done little to provide legitimate reasons over why he decided to accept the money and form a close friendship with someone who runs such a shady business. Pol Gen Somyot said he started borrowing money from Kampol Wirathepsuporn, the fugitive owner recently accused of human trafficking and other illicit activities, in October 2014. As the then, newly appointed national top cop, Pol Gen Somyot should have distanced himself from such an ethically dubious loan.

    Forget World Cup bid

    News, Editorial, Published on 10/10/2017

» The Minister of Tourism and Sports has some wise words against the outlandish proposal to bid, jointly with Indonesia, for the 2034 World Cup. If anything, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul should have been stronger. Even though the plan to pursue such a project is still being formed, Ms Kobkarn, with her good business sense, has pointed out some of the follies and the cabinet should pay heed to her opinion. The massive investment required just to bid should disqualify this effort.

    News, Editorial, Published on 07/01/2017

» The continued increase in tourist arrivals speaks for itself. Thailand's potential for tourism development remains high and there is no reason why the country should not take every opportunity to capitalise on this bustling industry.

Kick the chaos out of football

    News, Editorial, Published on 22/12/2016

» Spectators at last Saturday's football match at Bangkok's Rajamangala National Stadium were very lucky indeed that nobody was injured by the throwing of flares. Luck, however, should not be something they need to rely on though strict security measures are. The safety of the public at sports and other events must not be compromised.

    Football fans find outlet

    News, Editorial, Published on 24/10/2016

» The general mourning instructions issued by the government after the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej were flexible and sensible. There were always going to be exceptions. As Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha advised, don't mock people in "different clothes"--they may be in a mandatory work uniform. As Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said, think the best of everyone and don't be judgemental of exactly how to refer to the late King.
