LIFE

The American dream gone sour

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 19/02/2016

» More than other countries, the “idea” of America is greater than America itself, as Dr Bennet Omalu finds out. Omalu is a Nigerian pathologist working in Pittsburgh as he waits to be naturalised, and as played by Will Smith, he’s a specimen of a noble, intelligent, optimistic soul who can’t stand dishonesty and injustice. In short, his principles are more American than those of most Americans themselves. That shouldn’t be a problem, until he performs an autopsy on an American football legend and finds that the great American sport has ruined its players beyond repair, driving some of them into suicidal insanity.

Political musings

Life, Published on 11/01/2016

» Politicians are sometimes regarded with disdain, but Asst Prof Trirong Suwankhiri from the Democrat Party is often exempt from such an unfriendly regard. The public, especially those who have grown up observing the politics of the 1980s and 90s, remember him as "Doctor Sam Sri", which refers to the meaning of his name -- "the Thai flag with three colours". A true orator, Trirong's parliamentary debates were full of humour and gags and delivered in his signature thick southern accent. What sets him apart is not just his comical nature, but his relatively corruption-free image.

One-off

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 16/02/2015

» Authors and publishers are still experimenting with their craft. An honest lawyer

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 26/01/2015

» This reviewer doesn't know how good a lawyer John Grisham is. Certainly he's no Clarence Darrow, whose winning cases are still talked about a century later. But Darrow didn't pen courtroom dramas, while Grisham does. Many other lawyers do too, with Grisham's regarded, critically and popularly, as the pick of the crop.

Well-deserved praise

Life, Published on 08/12/2014

» Novelists have a jaundiced view of the media in general, the press in particular. To hear them tell it the Fourth Estate's primarily sensational, scandal-mongering is their bread and butter.

Putting the planet first

Muse, Published on 06/09/2014

» Every now and then, we all come across some striking design that leaves us flabbergasted and causes the word "wow!" to echo in our ears as we scratch our heads and wonder how the designer ever managed to come up with such a masterpiece. And as the number of self-proclaimed environmentalists in this much-less-green-that-it-used-to-be world of ours increases, many creative types are designing objects they hope will boost environmental awareness.

All he needs is Kill

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 04/07/2014

» Executioner. Murderer. Killing. Doing his job. The swirl of inner-conflict and the fog of moral dilemma must’ve accompanied Thailand’s “last executioner”, the man whose professional duty was to pull the trigger and dispatch death row convicts. Between 1984 and 2002, Chavoret Jaruboon executed 55 prisoners by gun, before the Thai law changed the execution method to lethal injection.
