» 2017 was a whirlwind of a year, but we are now in the budding days of 2018 and while we realise most of us are still recovering from holiday feasting, it's time to leave the past behind and look ahead. There are a number of reasons to be excited about 2018, from concerts to (possible) developments in the city itself. To kick off our very first issue of the new year, we at Guru have compiled a list of things to look forward to in 2018. Strap yourselves in. It's gonna be one heck of a year.

» Bangkok can be a paradoxical city. Everyone pretty much takes it easy and everything is sabai sabai and though that's mostly a good thing, there are times you want some excitement. On the other hand, sometimes you walk out of the office after a gruelling day only to be met by the headache-inducing commute of a crowded train or heavy traffic. So how do you get your dose of excitement and at the same time let off some steam? Perhaps you go to the gym. Perhaps you and your friends gather for one or two friendly matches of football. Perhaps going to the bar for drinks is exciting and de-stressing enough for you. But this week, we've compiled a list of places and things you can do that are a little out of the norm. And while there's definitely a long way to go in terms of gender equality, especially in Asia, it's inspiring to learn about AKIN ASIA in the Big Mango that seeks to empower and connect women from different walks of life. Hosting events like social dinners, workshops and panels, AKIN ASIA creates opportunities for networking and a space for women to share and discuss ideas. Guru spoke to Nicola Jones-Crossley, founder of AKIN ASIA, about the inspiring work she is doing.
Talking Bright

» Released globally a few weeks ago, Bright is the ambitious Netflix original genre-bending film that stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton as cops in a present-day Los Angeles inhabited by mythical creatures like orcs and elves. The film is Netflix's biggest film to date with a budget of $90 million as well as a global press tour prior to the film's release. Guru was able to be part of the Japan premiere and press junket and had an opportunity to talk to producers Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless, director David Ayer (who also directed Will Smith in Suicide Squad), and actress Noomi Rapace about Bright.
From Provence to Bangkok

» The setting: Tucked away in soi 36 of the growing riverside destination of Charoen Krung lies French St., away from the noise and pollution of the crowded Bangkok streets that make it a perfect getaway dining destination. Opened for three weeks, the aesthetic and atmosphere of the restaurant contributes to the casual and relaxing feel that the restaurant is going for. While there is an option to dine and chill indoors, where the bar is, as well as in the second floor dining room, the garden is definitely the go-to spot for diners. It's bathed with just the right amount of sunlight during the afternoon and adorned with twinkling lights and candles on the tables during the evening. The casual, laid-back vibe French St. gives off is not just evident in the restaurant itself, but also the food.

» Tiny Tree started out as an online terrarium shop on IG. They've got two locations and are planning to add one more, but it's only at their store on Sukhumvit 31 that they serve a brunch-and-coffee-style menu. It's a way to have their customers participating in their weekend terrarium workshops, something to munch on while in the midst of it, but over time it's also become a place for people to chill, do work or have friends gather over a small meal and drinks.
Ice ice baby

» Shaved ice is commonly found streetside in Bangkok and is a cheap way to cool yourself from the blistering heat even in the middle of December (Yeah, this cool wave generally doesn't last long). Taiwan's got their own version of shaved ice topped with a little more than just syrup and milk, and Taro Cube is one of the latest dessert shops to the Taiwanese version in the Land of Smiles. Despite being open a mere two months, Taro Cube's already got three locations. The newest and biggest one at Central Pinklao has a slightly larger menu than the other two, but we opted to visit the branch at Central Chidlom.

» The setting: Not to be confused with Saffron, the indoor restaurant, Saffron Sky Garden is high above the hustle, bustle and traffic of Sathon Road on the 52nd floor. This garden lounge has recently reopened and caters to those who are looking to unwind after work over a drink or two, or perhaps a romantic night out with a special someone. Plus, it's a more intimate and less crowded alternative than the famous Vertigo and offers the same breathtaking view of the Bangkok skyline and Chao Phraya River. You can choose to sit at their high-stools and tables or choose the bigger tables with comfy couches if you're looking to order more than just drinks.
