'Yellow vests' just want their aspirations respected

    News, Published on 06/12/2018

» Just over 50 years ago, Jacques Tati's Playtime opened in French movie theatres. In the comedy, Tati once again features his iconic character, Monsieur Hulot, the confused but courtly Parisian who confronts the challenges of a rapidly modernising France. This time, Mr Hulot tries to navigate the shining and sleek newly developed periphery of Paris, suddenly bristling with buildings and streets that are indistinguishable from one another. The camera captures the hopelessness of Mr Hulot's quest when it focuses on a rond-point, or traffic circle, around which slow-moving cars and buses, like brightly coloured horses on a merry-go-round, circle endlessly.

Lots of promises as big day approaches

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/04/2023

» With the Great Event, otherwise known as election day, just around the corner, like most countries in the world we will have to brace ourselves for regular helpings of political poppycock including plenty of promises from prospective candidates. Still, it could be fun.

    Noisy riders are relevant

    News, Postbag, Published on 07/10/2018

» Re: "Summary execution", (PostBag, Oct 6). Unfortunately, my letter was cruelly edited to the point that it made little sense. In my original, I included photographs in support, and said that although a (very weak) argument could be made for motorcycles riding on the footpath against the flow of traffic, none can be made for those that ride on the footpath with the flow of traffic.

    Lighting the way

    News, Postbag, Published on 27/12/2017

» The sad reality of all the road carnage in Thailand is that, even with strict traffic law enforcement and widespread public relations and education programmes, it will take at least a generation to change the driving habits of the current population.

Cops are queuing up for inactive posts

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/02/2023

» It has been quite an entertaining week although admittedly not everyone involved will see the funny side. An Air Force officer says he is happy he was caught after snatching a necklace at a gold shop because he wanted to get away from his wife and a prison cell would do nicely. A rather bizarre motive, but he got his wish. Apparently a lengthy spell in the slammer beats a daily nagging.

Real soap opera, and police fairy tales

    Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 04/08/2015

» It happened at the notorious Asoke-Sukhumvit intersection, one of the most congested road junctions in Bangkok. It is always busy, with crawling bumper-to-bumper traffic day after day, except on long weekends when citysiders head for the countryside.
