» The series of troubles and embarrassments caused by Chinese tourists over the past few years has continued, but never fails to take me by surprise.

Animal rights should be human instinct

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 18/11/2014

» Day after day, I hear sad stories about tortured or abandoned animals and shed tears. With a weary heart, I have long hoped Thailand would pass a law to combat animal torture and ensure proper care for animals. Fortunately, the long fight for animal rights is almost over, as the draft law on animal protection passed all three readings by the National Legislative Assembly last week.

    Animal instincts

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 04/07/2014

» Shock was the very first feeling I had upon seeing a photo on Facebook informing me of the existence of the Thai Wildlife Hunting Society a few days ago. It was very quickly followed by anger. The Facebook page of this group is full of pictures of wild animal carcasses (monkeys, leopards, wild birds and many more) and the hunters’ weapons.

    Use guilt for good

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 21/03/2014

» At least once in a lifetime, we must experience feelings of guilt for not doing well enough, not making the right decisions or not helping someone in need. For more than 40 years, I have experienced many guilty feelings and managed to get through them wisely and wrongly. Fortunately, these experiences have had no impact on the safety of other people, unlike the recent one witnessed by my neighbours.

» Hugging the shores of the Andaman Sea, Phangnga is best known for the stunning dive sites around the Surin and Similan islands and the immaculate strands of Khao Lak. But it has much more to offer. Inland are beautiful mountains carpeted with lush vegetation, tranquil streams and waterfalls bound to impress amateur explorers, a diversity of cultures and a rich history of human settlement dating back more than a thousand years.

Nature and art near the city

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 19/12/2013

» If Bangkok-based tourists have a free day to visit nearby provinces besides the perennially popular Ayutthaya, Chon Buri or Phetchaburi, Saraburi's Muak Lek district and the adjacent Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima are among good choices, especially during the cool season. Both districts are well-known for their lush scenery, variety of attractions and proximity to the capital.

    Echoes of a Storied Past

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 12/09/2013

» Kanchanaburi has long been a popular destination for day-trippers. Legions of tourists, both local and foreign, regularly make the short trip from Bangkok to visit scenic Sai Yok Waterfall and remnants of the infamous Death Railway like Hellfire Pass and the renamed "Bridge On The River Kwai". But astonishingly few visitors venture into the oldest section of this laid-back town which boasts some fine examples of architecture, well-preserved buildings dating from just before World War II right back to the mid-19th century.

    Unveiling Antiquities

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 29/04/2013

» Princely drama and art nouveau blend exquisitely in Parusakawan Palace. Once the private abode of princes and a king, whose stories were characterised by romance, heartbreak and splendour, the palace is now open to the public as it houses the first police museum in the country. A visit to the palace is to marvel at one of Thailand's finest examples of architecture and an evocation of aristocratic nostalgia.

    The write message

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 28/01/2013

» Recently crowned a National Artist and once voted Thailand's favourite novelist, Tomyantee is a recognisable name even to those who don't read novels. The recognition from the Ministry of Culture came with cheers but probably without surprise; it was only a matter of time before Tomyantee, a grand dame of letters who's been in poor health lately, was awarded the country's most prestigious artistic honour.
