Has McKinsey & Co finally become unleadable?
News, Published on 27/01/2024
» It's a big year for elections -- and that includes McKinsey & Co's poll to pick the Global Managing Partner for the next three years. As in so many elections, there's a difference between the skills needed to get the job and those required once elected.

Brakes on seawalls
Oped, Editorial, Published on 10/06/2023
» The new environmental law on seawall project development is a real celebration of World Ocean Day, which fell on Thursday. The long overdue environmental code that requires environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for such structures is expected to help slow down the rapid development of seawall projects in coastal areas.

Are scientific breakthroughs on the decline?
News, Published on 27/12/2023
» This year had barely begun when scientists got some jolting news. On Jan 4, a paper appeared in Nature claiming that disruptive scientific findings have been waning since 1945. An accompanying graph showed all fields on a steep downhill slide.

Love yourself the right way
Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 20/02/2023
» No matter whether you are a man or a woman, the choice of plastic surgery or choosing to age gracefully has long been a fascinating topic of debate, especially when it comes to people in the media and celebrities. Famous people like Melanie Griffith, Mickey Rourke, Linda Evangelista, Renée Zellweger and Gwen Stefani have all been noticed or criticised for whether they have had cosmetic surgery or not. It is easy for these people to become an example of society's criticism because they are seen on a regular basis in magazines or on TV. Many people on social media have something to say about it.

Delay torture law no more
Oped, Editorial, Published on 19/05/2023
» After a long waiting game, the police and other law enforcement agencies must fully implement the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act after the Constitutional Court on Thursday ruled 8-1 against an executive decree postponing the enforcement of sections 22-25 of the Act until October this year, calling it unconstitutional.

Watch Apple TV's Extrapolations for the science, not the story
Life, Published on 10/04/2023
» Hollywood has long mined global warming to create terrifying scenarios of apocalyptic futures. Some of these aren't very realistic. Others are all preaching and no teaching. But the new Apple TV series Extrapolations takes a different, more science-steeped approach -- the episodes cascade through the future of this century, using real scientific projections and computer-generated special effects to show how global warming might play out under the most likely scenario.

Quit delaying the anti-torture law
News, Editorial, Published on 29/01/2023
» The long-awaited anti-torture law is set to take effect next month. However, the Royal Thai Police is requesting a delay in its enforcement, citing a lack of readiness. The government must reject this request as it is a last-ditch effort to preserve the police's often violent interrogation tactics and culture of impunity.

The worldwide population boon
Oped, Published on 31/03/2023
» An easy way to start a long, heated debate is to mention global population. Thomas Malthus famously ignited furious arguments in the 19th century when he warned that, absent fertility-control policies, exponential population growth would outpace improvements in agriculture and cause recurrent bouts of famine and pestilence. Industrialisation would postpone the crisis, but not forever.

Welcome to the really silly season
Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/12/2023
» It's Christmas Eve and we are well into the Jinger Ben season in Thailand (Jingle Bells to the uninitiated). But in these dodgy times one suspects there might not be too much jingling going on. Nonetheless, considering all the gloomy news of late, a couple of weeks of being a bit daft offers a welcome break. So we might as well make the most of the Jinger Ben jollity, like a lady teller at my bank who was sporting some rather cute rabbit ears.

US-led naval force may not end Houthi ship strikes
News, Published on 22/12/2023
» US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has announced a new military effort in the Middle East: Operation Prosperity Guardian. It will bring together a coalition of nations to safeguard the dangerous waters of the Red Sea, North Arabian Sea and western Indian Ocean from surprisingly sophisticated attacks by Iranian-sponsored terrorists from the Houthi rebellion in Yemen.
