    Padding the facts

    Database, Published on 10/02/2010

» What a difference an "a" makes, announced Apple as it introduced its new iPad (not iPod) tablet; it is the successor to the Apple Newton MessagePad, which went out of production in 1998 after dozens were sold; like the Newton, the iPad will let users write directly on it and save to memory, and cost less than $1,500, or about 50,000 baht in real 2010 money. The Apple iPad tablet (said a writer at Popular Mechanics magazine) might shake up six industries: it could give revenue to newspapers, rebuild comic books because it has colour, make a whole new platform for magazine publishers, revolutionise mobile gaming, kill netbooks for couch surfing, and boost the market for PC parts starting with flash memory.

    Need to know

    Database, Published on 17/02/2010

» The US Federal Bureau of Investigation began a campaign to force all Internet providers in the United States to record and file all web activity by all users, all the time, in case the FBI ever needed the information; FBI director Robert Mueller said he wants storage of "origin and destination information," able to be retrieved with a search warrant issued by a judge in important cases such as terrorism, kidnapping, criticism of FBI and the like; in a huge, shocking coincidence, pretty well every US state investigation bureau backed the FBI proposal, because you never know when a state prosecutor might need information about the surfing habits of a nefarious outlaw, paedophile or political opponent, not that top investigators would ever stoop to asking for politically related surfing records, perish the thought; the FBI, by the way, does not want actual data such as email retained, only the information recording the origin and destination of a web session - for now.

    Out of the blue

    Database, Published on 17/02/2010

» PM's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey decided right out of the blue to call on the Magnificent Seven to get their act together and press ahead with an auction of third-generation phone bandwidth, and to heck with the consequences, constitution and so on; the National Telecommunications Commission, in his opinion, needs to move along because the public needs 3G. The National Telecommunications Commission chuckled at Mr Sathit, and made another decision to delay another project, this one the application by No 1 yuppiephone network Advanced Info Service of Shingapore to fire up its proposed roaming service with your TOT; the problem was so important that the NTC gave it to a deputy secretary, Thakorn Boonyasith, who said the proposed new TOT-AIS hookup could violate the terms of the old TOT-AIS concession; AIS wants to suck up most of the TOT's 3G bandwidth, such as it is, in return for which it will allow other customers to use AIS facilities for calls outside the small corner of Bangkok where 3G is actually available.

Lasting Friendships can be a tall order

Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 21/02/2010

» I was having a solitary lunch last Tuesday with my dear friend Evil Neil when a phone call came out of the blue. A phone call on my cellphone, that is. Regular readers are cognizant of Neil, a helpless victim of corporate cellular phone advertising who changes his phone as often as we eat somtam, and who, with every new device, plasters Superglue between it and his ear so that it's permanently stuck to his head - hence my "solitary" lunch with him last Tuesday.
