Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/12/2020

» The year of 'Rona meant a lot of changes in the way we do things hence the term "new normal", and Geekdom wasn't left unscathed. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it was all bad. There are things we enjoyed watching this year with all the time we had on our hands and fan events that we "attended" right in the comfort of our own home that we wouldn't be able to normally attend. At the same time, there were some things that sadly suffered because of the pandemic and a certain something that fell flat despite all the hype. Here's the winners and losers of 2020 in geek.

Battling sandstorms and scary spiders

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 06/01/2021

» It seems like a very challenging task to successfully adapt hit video games into live action TV and movies as the quest has frustrated far more creators and studios than it's rewarded. High expectations from diehard fans often hobble these adaptations from the start. Yet one fearless filmmaker is Paul W.S. Anderson who moved from one video game franchise adaptation to another, beginning in 1995, with the martial arts fantasy Mortal Kombat to the zombie apocalypse action-packed Resident Evil franchise, four of which he directed. From make-up artists to cake designers, here are Thais who are getting recognition locally and internationally for their work.

Transpacific cable is cut, for now

Life, James Hein, Published on 16/09/2020

» In light of the problems between the USA and China, and that those in power in Beijing want to grab data from US networks, Google and Facebook have dropped plans to build an undersea cable between the US and Hong Kong. The new target limits the landing points to the Philippines and Taiwan and now excludes Hong Kong. The HK section of the cable is built but will not now be activated due to a national security agreement between the US and Google and Facebook. I will predict that if Joe Biden wins the next US election this decision will be revisited.
