Are the foreigners finding a sense of peace in Issarn?

» Dear FOS, I quite agree with you. I-Saan can still be a very charming place, even for me, I do see two different faces of I-Saan. The country side with its villages and the big metropolitan areas. I grow up in a little village with some 500 inhabitants myself. In our village there were more cows,...

    • DocN commented : Dear FOS ...can it be that again we are ...well...talking about the same thing, but... My remark was a cynical one, concerning the ever so popular "it's a bargirl and even more from Isaan, so what do you expect?!"- thingy that's going on here. I hate this kind of stereotyping. I guess there are hundreds of bar-girls out there who are nice and hardworking, as there are studied what-evers who are just plain monsters. Mind you: I am in Bangkok for 16 months now and the times I went to Patpong I can count on one hand. And even those times were those when my boss (a Thai) took me there! I wouldn't go there, if you paid me for it! I don't know, but all this smile-mai pen rai-tradition-bargirl-talking is annoying me more and more. I used to love this country, that's why I came here in the first place. Seems that you don't get any respect here, you get ripped off (as a farang) and people just laugh about you. And all of that hiding behind traditions that (to me , living in the 21st century) seem to be an 18th century excuse to have prejudices, be racist and cover up crimes and lies. Mind you: I met some very nice people here. Hard working, honest, careing (my Isaan, ex-bargirl girlfriend is among those)...I am just more and more scared every day to find out, even these true friends and nice people are just using me and that there is no such thing as an honest , respectful thai. It's easy to say "use your brain"! That was what I was doing from the day I got here, I was by no means thinking with other parts of my body! I just tried to be nice and friendly (would you know me personally, I guess you would have to admit that I am...that sounds cocky, right?!...*lol*)...and all I got were kicks in my butt. Ok...I will stop wining now. Have a nice day!

I am very lucky as my issarn mother in law is a wonderful woman who raised 10 children by herself after her husband was murdered for his land, despite her extreme poverty neither she or the rest of the family have ever hasselled me for anything, she wakes up early every morning to prepare food for the monks in the local temple and although she is getting fairly old she still has a great sense of humour. Your mother in law sounds like a real cow don't give in to her demands just to keep your girlfriend happy ,as far as i know by thai culture if you marry a girl that has been married previously and has a child she is known as a spoilt wife and there is no need for you to pay any kind of dowrie. If relations with your girlfriends family are so bad then you can never have any kind of future with her, get out now while you still can there are plenty of good thai girls with good families out there

» Well, sometimes the rich and famous due get locked up. http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... rs-in-jail

    • MoCuishle commented : Heya Fast Eddy, Good to hear from you, I have stayed online to await your respone so that you could be more measured and I could reply. Thank you* "Rose coloured glasses"? No, I don't feel that is a valid comment. I worked in English prisons for five years, I worked as a therapist in a group for violent and abusive men. I earned my right to see clearly and to stay in my heart in the midst of the most awful human suffering. I worked for Palestine and wept when Israel launched it's last assult. "[i:3pqd3pkc]Thankfully on the whole, our countries have got passed such excesses though as you mentioned America still has some way to go given the conduct of 'W'. I think I was very shocked at how his family felt that his actions were exceedingly trivial given that in their opinion such low class citizens who use buses don't deserve human rights and the right to life.[/i:3pqd3pkc] First of all I have to ask "who are our countries?" This is so divisive! I do not know anything about his parents feeling that l only low class citizens use buses. Do you know that is absolutely true? The criminal justice system in the UK and in the US is a huge money making operation. Illiterate, poor and mentally ill peope are regularly locked up mainly because they are vulnerable. Incidentally when Lord Archer was imprisoned, he made a fortune selling his "prison diaries" even though it is illegal to make money from your crime in the U.K. And he is still in the House of Lords! Yeah, that is my yuk thing, that p****s me off. It costs over 20,000 THB to keep one person in prison per week in the U.K. Can we really afford that? Watch it all fall apart now. I have a friend who works as a teacher in a private Thai school and she regularly tears her hair out because the the parents will pay more so that their children "pass" their exams or go up a class. She has tolerated, with great patience parents who do their children's homework because they are more concerned with results and their "ego status" than with the true spirit of education. She is one of those extraordinary people who look with real*eyes. As do I. I don't think that acceptance and change comes when one is judging another as inferior or evil. I feel it comes when we endeavour to go beyond our blind emotional reactions and strive for understanding. Twinkles to you Fast Eddy. MoCushle

If you are rich or famous enough then anything is possible."--- Victor, you cannot possibly be serious in this comparison between the Thai and American judicial systems. In cases of motor vehicle negligence there is no 'negotiation' in the states and law/sentencing is adhered to quite uniformly, particularly when it is a matter of involuntary manslaughter. You can be sure that this individual would be in jail for several years (most likely more than 10 as an initial sentence) in the states no matter what family he was from. while it is true that the American judicial system needs some adjustments in areas such as white collar crime... please refrain from letting your frustration with specific American policies inform your overall opinion...especially if you so choose to propagate such ill informed opinions on a public message board such as this Avi the American
