men in tight brown shirts and related stories

By fast eddy, Created on: 05/02/2009, Last updated on: 06/02/2009

» Todya's opinion page saw a highly charged discussion on Thailand's thin brown line (well except for those in the 'oh my God it's 40 inches' weight control scheme) and their creative policing of the realm. I'm sure most of us have experienced twilight zone mini-episodes with these gentlemen and a couple...

    • sulasno commented : p to the lights . My protestations went unheeded and I had to pay up a 200bt fine . The problem? I only had a 500bt note and he only had 100bt change. However, in true Thai style he winked and told me to wait. He went back into the traffic and stopped another motorist, fined him two hundred baht and added that to the 100 he already had to give me my 300bt change and waved me back out into the traffic! Priceless and well worth the 200bt fine just for the story Would be interested to hear from the rest of you - it could make a good book. Cheers Fast Eddy[/quote:gf2c2q2p] hmmmmm ......................... didn't you try to bargain it down to just 100 baht (just like true Thai style) ? I had something similar; A 500 baht to pay a 100 baht "fine" told Bangkok's finest to hang on while I had to p e e (was stopped at an intersection with a petrol kiosk nearby) got change for my 500 into 5 red ones and toss one into the drawer of his table

    • stilljustbrowsing commented : bht for one that stops at all stations.

    • ohm commented : bht for one that stops at all stations. [/quote:s52blwsq] According to the tv reports, the cost is 150 baht for non stop. There’s a WC on board as well! Also something about flight check-in at the station, but I didn't get all the details on that.

    • puzzled commented : As I look out my window at work I can see the last station being built at a 90 degree angle to the Pahon Yotin Sky Train Station. The roof looks completed, the inside is still bare concrete, of course, but the windows on the sides have been installed. On the north side, looks like good progress is being made on the road which I guess will run from Pahon Yotin to Rajadamri. Surfacing is not done but the curbing is being poured. It looks like it is progressing nicely. There are no shops in the Phan Yotin station. I guess this will change very soon. Progress. It is too bad the Sky Train doesn't go to Don Muang at least. It would be a direct link. As is I can imagine the taxis will be lined up ready to ask for a non metered, overcharged fare for the unaware. And yes, it is supposed to be ready for the December birthday.

    The Value of a Tourist.

By Sean Moran, Created on: 18/01/2009, Last updated on: 15/12/2010

» What are some of the most common positive and negative results of foreign tourists from overseas visiting Thailand? Thai opinions welcome, kap.

    • Stense commented :

Tourist trash with money? You'd better believe it. If you go to Pattaya, your jaw can sometimes hit the floor listening to some of the alcoholics in the bars. How the hell did these uneducated low-lifes get money for a return flight and 3 to 6 months living expenses... and more to the point, what about the job they have to go back to? (Excluding the retired; Borat: "You are a retard?"). Last time I was in the Pig and Whistle it was a group of WINDOW CLEANERS who had this miraculous disposable income... Add in the increasing amount of Russian visitors into this scenario (interesting that a German poster should get so annoyed about their increasing numbers over here, can't think why!). And the answer? THAILAND ATTRACTS CRIMINALS.[/quote:32h45niw] Oh, You moral crusader - Who are You, that You judge people as low-lifes etc. ? How somebody can make money for long stay in Thailand ? Easily. For example - in Europe - it is just enough to have independent job - just work for You - like plumber or even window cleaner and after 6 months You have money to live in Thailand for next 6 months - no problem Russian visitors ? Many countries in EU tolerate them because of money, but definitely not like them - They do not know how to behave in polite way - most of them Tourist trash with money? Pattaya is not a problem - only 10 pct. of prostitution in Thailand is consumed by farangs - 90 pct. is for locals. Sorry, how long have you lived in Pattaya It is a few so named semi official figures on clients of prostitutes conducted by a University: Bangkok, 60% local clients ( far lower prices for married Thai men, this as many have punch card with the same) and 40% foreigners.Pattaya, 90% foreigners and 10% Thai. From where do you have your "consume figures," better what would a place like Pattaya have looked like, this without tourists and foreigners having selected the city firstly for their retirement If you go to Soy 9, the main police station and ask a question on prostitution, they will tell you that it is "No prostitution in Pattaya" - this said, if you give a average officer you can speak English with Bath 1000+, he might say:" Sorry, we have probably 80% of all ladies under 40 from Issan, but those we do not count." , and good luck with your studies. One suggestion - VISA only for people with master degree - but You will be very suprised how many of those educated will go to spent their money in Pattaya[/quote:32h45niw]

    • Voice commented : Hello Kantouch, I found your statement very confusing as it contradicting each other. On one you are saying as quote ]“Sondhi has been charged with violating the L.M. law but says he's not worried about it. Why should he, when he has another previous charge for violation of the L.M. law that has been sitting in the courts for THREE YEARS without a ruling. When justice is applied equally to all, when judges made decisions BASED ON LEGAL FACTS AND LAWS, then you are more than welcome to say THE LAW IS THE LAW. Until then, in Thailand, THE LAW IS A JOKE!! I mean no disrespect towards you, but merely stating my opinion[/quote:2kjg8z3b]. And again you said ]“are you saying this Law is improper or wrong ???? are you against this law ?? are you saying the judge also was wrong? are you saying this judge was incompetent ? down at Dusit Police Station theirs many that would love to here your story. their awaiting your visit[/quote:2kjg8z3b] May I ask you where are you stand on these issue? Do you agree that our justice system is wrong or you think it’s OK? Please give me your definition.
