The symptoms of a virus, but not a virus?

Database, James Hein, Published on 04/08/2010

» What is the definition of a virus? Or, for that matter, malware? My definition would be something that stops you doing what you want to on your computer or something that has been placed on your computer to cause damage or to use your computer in a way you have not approved or intended. It is also a program that resists your efforts to remove it. Now of course there may be some security software or organisationally applied software that falls under this definition so let's focus on your home machines for the purpose of this definition.

    Going places

» Google also wants to know where you're going and how you plan to get there; the king of search rifled the lunch money for $700 million to buy ITA Software, a US company organised in 1996 by computer scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; it sells the software that runs many airlines' reservations systems, and services travel sites including Kayak, FareCompare, Hotwire and Microsoft's own Bing Travel; Google CEO Eric "I Know Jack" Schmidt promised that he "will improve the way flight information is organised", but the US Justice Department said this deal will get a tough look by the anti-monopoly division.

    Oil and water don't mix

Learningpost, David Canavan, Published on 13/07/2010

» Oil is always in the news for some reason or another, whether for fluctuating barrel prices, oil-rig fires, or tanker crashes and leaks. Recently, it is because of the gigantic semi-submersible Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (Modu), called Deepwater Horizon, that exploded on April 20, resulting in millions of litres of crude oil gushing into the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The oil rig is leased by BP Plc, fka British Petroleum, a British-based global energy company.

    America bashing at Esplanade Mall

» I putting this post up because it is related to international relationships with American citizens living and visiting Thailand. It illustrated to me that little is known about America by most people in Thailand, in fact, I think that few in the world truly understand what America is about and how...

Are there any good marriages out there?

By terry, Created on: 20/04/2010, Last updated on: 25/09/2011

» The reason I started this post was to hear good stories of couples getting together. All of the bad things I have heard in Thailand I have seen here in the USA. I treat my wife very well but still now and then she goes over board on spending. As a family we go to to the Wat once a week. Maybe that...

    • bhvmaia commented : After seven years of marriage to my Thai wife, I am madly in love with her. Every year, every day, she gets better, our life gets better. She is a traditional Thai village girl with strong Buddhist beliefs and high honor. She is content with our level in society, she does not fall victim to 'epudee' notions of competing with other Thais in showing off by spending. Marriage to a 'rich farang' has not distorted her view on life, she knows that our security is much more important than the foolish shallow opinions of others. I helped her learn English and start with simple jobs until she qualified for a position at a national retailer where she is building seniority and a solid retirement account. In four years she has raised herself to trustworthy authority and 'top pay' in her category as cashier. I also gave her computers and helped her learn online stock market trading and now she manages her own investment accounts, where she has been very successful. I am enormously proud of her. I know other 'farang' whose experience is similar to mine, and to those who are having different results, look to yourself for why. Either you chose rashly and wrongly, or you have not learned how to bring out the best in a Thai woman. Understand that she needs a strong hand, so that she understands where you want to go and what you need from her. Understand also that when she gives herself to you, it is a deep commitment, and therefore you inherit a major responsibility to keep her as your highest priority and cherish her as a jewel, as your queen. She looks to you for inspiration, you have to become her hero. To do that, you have an obligation to become better than you are, bigger than you are. If you succeed in that, everything else will follow automatically.

Re: Farangs Barred From Buying Thai Land

By pachangamac042, Created on: 27/05/2009, Last updated on: 22/12/2015

» [quote="Papadragon":19d1c84s] [b:19d1c84s]Foreigners cannot use a Thai spouse as a nominee to buy property in Thailand, however. “If the Thai spouse has enough money to buy the house that is fine, but if the Thai has no money and uses money given to him or her by a foreigner to acquire...

    • OSKIWI commented : Agree this is typical of a lot of Thailand thinking. The country could be an Asian economic power house, if only they though like Singaporeans or Europeans. (sorry to say) They are very short sited and cannot see into the future or reality. (most of them, not all) European countries like Australia or NZ allow foreign ownership without question. In NZ you can buy up to 12 acres if you have the cash. Over that you need to get approval (which is fair enough) What are they scared of, that foreigners will buy up Thailand and kick out the Thais? how is this possible? 1) how is any foreigners going to get themselves together to buy up all the land 2) how are all Thais going to sell all their land, its so precious to them and Thai developers are not going to sell all their holdings 3) How can foreigners do anything, as they cant vote or be in government and control legislation only the Thais, so its impossible for the Thai to loose their country, even if Foreigners were sold all the land including government buildings and land. Allow investment in stock market, in land of small size like 12 acres maximum (have legislation to make it transparent no hiding behind paper companies to own land or buildings), have a higher land tax on foreigners even if you want and make a little cash (spend it on infrastructure ), give head offices tax breaks like singapore, make it easy for them to do business in Thailand. Yes you give companies 10 years tax free if they setup in Thailand a head office of a multi national - but you gain those people coming to live here and spend their expat salaries, companies pay income tax on it to, the rental market goes up and again more tax revenue from landlords, more developers building. More Thais employed due to increase in companies and businesses opening in Thailand, again more taxes, more spending on food and living, again more taxes to collect and more jobs needed. More people flying in and out of Thailand to do business, so more air traffic, more money for AOT, more money for THAI airways, more revenue and taxes again. SO the corporate tax you have given away for 10 years, is nothing, its tiny compared to the money and taxes and development it would bring to the country. Add this to allowing foreign ownership and you have the start of a booming economy and country, plus if there is any corruption in Thailand, then those people too will be making more, so everyone is happy. Go on Thailand do it! Be the power house economy and country that you can be...

    Are Farang invisible to Thai?

By Jason McDonald, Created on: 21/06/2009, Last updated on: 15/12/2010

» I ask this to find out if farang are really invisible to Thai. When I am out with my Thai wife, especially shopping, I find that, Thai people refuse to...

    • klikster commented : I think if you live in the "country", and speak a little Thai, you become more "visible". I'm single, old and ugly as hell .. and every time I went to the weekend market to stock up, it seemed like every stall owner knew a friend who had a good heart, worked hard .. and needed a husband.
