Riding high in the simulated Wild West

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 05/12/2016

» Looking all parts American perfection and stomaching spicy dishes surprisingly well (according to his bodyguard) for a first-timer in Singapore, James Marsden was in the Lion City last week to promote the season finale of HBO's Westworld. As the human equivalent of goodness and sunshine, it becomes apparent that the Hollywood dreamboat is fittingly well-known for his nice-guy roles (in X-Men, The Notebook, Enchanted, Hairspray) because he is also such a person in real life. In fact, it all feels satisfyingly in-character when the 43-year-old admits that he loves Frank Capra movies and that the violence in Westworld isn't gratuitous.

» In case you haven't gotten the memo, this season's trend as seen on catwalks is about piling all kinds of prints and patterns together to create a frenzied, colourful jumble. To put the print-on-print-on-print effect all around you, Ikea's SPRIDD collection is just the thing for your home. In collaboration with fashion designer Kit Neale, the furnishing giant has released a range of tents, lanterns, mugs, bags, poufs and sleeping bags that use the bold patterns the East London brand is known for.

» As a counsellor working in an international school in Bangkok, Amornrat Sachdev's day is packed with children running into her office with nervous breakdowns. Besides her day job as an educator, she gives back to the wider community by leading parent and student workshops on emotional wellness, in addition to writing books.

» A Rolls-Royce executive warns not to walk around the recently-passed Bangkok International Motor Show with Victor Braun. Speaking of his colleague who had flown in from the luxury car manufacturer's headquarters in England, he says: "He'll look at things and say, 'Oh, that's all wrong. That's not nice'. His trained eye from Paris makes his taste in art very sharp. He sees things we don't see."

    A touch of class

» We all have problems, but your super red arowana aquarium fish being too drowsy to entertain your house guests because it just returned from getting a facelift or being locked out of inheriting a 64 acre palatial estate in the heart of Singapore would surely only qualify as "rich people problems".

    Food as art

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 16/09/2017

» Ever had saccharine dreams of gumdrop covered walls and tables made out of chocolate? Such creations are not only limited to the pages of Roald Dahl's fiction, as we've come to witness with the works of one pastry chef from Singapore. She may not wear a top hat, but Janice Wong is very much the modern-day Willy Wonka whose chocolates and desserts can unlock the chambers of wonder and glee inside all of us. On the "little red dot" on the world map, she is practically dessert royalty, having opened 2am:dessertbar 10 years ago to serve the sort of mouth-watering confectioneries that are so beautifully-plated it is literally painful to stab your fork into it. Today, her fanciful sweets are not only limited to being served in boxes or plates, as they actually make up the environment visitors find themselves in.

» Britain's dame of punk, Vivienne Westwood, is known for taking modern punk mainstream, but she is also outspoken on environmental issues. It is no surprise that her latest collection to drop in stores for spring summer 2018, Anglomania, draws most of its motifs from the concept of saving the world through sustainability and using less plastic.

    The paradox of pity

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 21/05/2018

» Thais are notoriously hopeless when it comes to the songsarn factor. Translated to English, the word means to pity or feel sorry for -- a trait ingrained in Thais as much as to be sabai sabai and never on time.
