A look back at another 'amazing' year
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 31/12/2017
» It is customary at this time of the year to take a not too serious look back on the past 12 months, although there are some events you may well prefer to forget. If nothing else it will serve as a reminder that Thailand will always be Truly Amazing.

Don't rely on last year's trends for global economy
Oped, Published on 16/01/2024
» Behavioural economists have popularised the term "recency bias" to describe our tendency to be disproportionately influenced by the latest events compared to earlier ones. Could this cognitive phenomenon explain why numerous analysts have a rather optimistic tilt for the world economy in 2024? Or are there really positive trends counterbalancing the obvious and mounting challenges to global growth?

Why do we even count down to the New Year?
Oped, Published on 29/12/2021
» Few people counted down to anything until the 1960s -- and yes, that included the new year. Celebrations and midnight kisses on Dec 31, of course. Countdowns, no. How, then, did the countdown go from almost non-existent to ubiquitous in the latter half of the 20th century? And why are we so drawn to them now, especially to mark one year's end and another's beginning?

Thai Words of the Year
Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 03/12/2021
» Collins Dictionary recently picked NFT, or non-fungible tokens, as 2021's Word of the Year and it got my language pedant self thinking two things. First, isn't NFT an acronym and hence it should be "acronym of the year" or two words of the year if we want to be that anal-retentive. Second, why don't I give the same treatment to the Thai language for your edutainment? Here's my personal pick of TWOTY.

The Year of ...
Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/12/2020
» Let's face facts, people. 2020 hasn't been kind to us but is indeed eventful -- mostly for bad reasons. The pandemic cast a gloom over a big chunk of the calendar and, while we hoped for a reprieve during the year-end festivities after having things relatively under control and -- boom! -- it's back, ruining our jolly mood and forcing the cancellations of many NYE parties and events. I'm sure the last 359 days have us thinking and rethinking about a lot of things in our lives and what 2020 would go down as in our personal history. Here is what 2020 means to me (and hopefully you, too).

Checklist: How Thai-Chinese are you?
Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/01/2022
» Thais of Chinese descent, my people, the Chinese New Year will soon be upon us and it's time to look at and appreciate our quirks, nuances and legacy. Let's celebrate by finding out how Thai-Chinese are we with this just-for-fun checklist. The more you tick, the more Thai-Chinese you are, obvi. Happy Chinese New Year, everyone!

Another year to remember, or maybe forget
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/12/2014
» Well, we've just about scraped through another 12 months, although at times things did look a bit on the shaky side. At least all the whistle-blowing has abated. Here are a few reminders of events and characters that graced the year 2014, although some you may prefer to forget.

One year on, still no sign of reconciliation
Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 13/01/2015
» A year ago, on Jan 13, the "Shutdown Bangkok" campaign was launched by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, its aim to cripple the government of then-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and to force it out of office.

Welcome to the year's merriest month
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/05/2021
» We are already in the merry month of May, not that there's much to be merry about these days.
