    Blast probe needs a hand

    News, Editorial, Published on 15/09/2015

» It is fair to say that authorities floundered for two weeks after the Aug 17 Erawan shrine bombing. Most of the leaders and officials in charge were clearly caught flat-footed. The military regime's deputy spokesman declared within hours of the blast, without any evidence, that it was clearly an evil act by the political forces ousted by last year's military coup. Credit police and supporting security forces, then, for so quickly turning investigative chaos into crackerjack detective work. Now comes the really hard part.

    Laos ignores dam flak

    News, Editorial, Published on 04/11/2015

» The Lao government is forging ahead with the construction of the massive Don Sahong dam, close to the tri-border area with Thailand and Cambodia, within the next few weeks. The dam is yet another large-scale project being undertaken by Vientiane to make Laos "the battery of Southeast Asia". Under the programme, Laos intends to become a serious electricity exporter to its neighbours. This may happen. But what is already certain to happen is that the projects will disrupt the Mekong River and affect the people of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand like never before.

Beijing should step back and prevent a possible tragedy with sensible and sensitive actions.

» Belatedly, the cabinet's decision on Tuesday ordering the Public Warehouse Organisation (PWO) to buy 100,000 tonnes of all types of rubber products at above-market prices directly from rubber growers has managed to head off threatened protests by rubber growers, especially those in southern provinces. The decision was accepted by most rubber growers although many still want the government to subsidise the rubber sheet price at 60 baht a kilogramme.

    Asean must tackle China

    News, Editorial, Published on 22/02/2016

» China continues to push its presence in the South China Sea in unnecessarily provocative ways. Last week, while Asean leaders were in California for a rare US-sponsored summit, evidence of a new escalation in its muscle-flexing emerged. Satellite photos show Chinese troops finishing the installation of missiles in the Paracel Islands, one of the region's flashpoints. China confirmed the fresh military build-up, and then tried to justify it.
