» Every time I get an assignment in China, old images of chaotic cities pop up in my mind. From the country's notorious images of dirty toilets where severe smells always frighten foreigners, no queuing, noisy conversations, to the hustle and bustle of narrow roads where bicycles, tricycles, motorcycles, cars, and trucks share the same route and try to criss-cross each other, for me a trip to China means language barriers and a massive culture shock.

China and Russia showed off their military prowess by sending their troops and aircraft carriers to the area. Tensions in the Korean Peninsula have escalated in the past few weeks. The whole world is anxious about the possibility of the next war.

    A lesson in development

» On a windy day in Busan, South Korea, I stood before a small valley where the Gamchoen Culture Village is located. Streams of tourists tirelessly roam the community where colourful tiny houses pack the entire valley, as well as a nearby hill.

    Cleaning the street (stalls)

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 27/06/2016

» After news about the sale of suspected fake fruit juice broke last month, consumers should have better awareness and be more careful in terms of food safety, at least for a while. After vendors were raided and products seized, some people stop buying bottled orange juice from street vendors. They say to themselves at least until they are sure that the liquid inside those plastic bottles are real juices.

Easier to sell with a story to tell

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 12/01/2016

» Decades ago, it might have sounded ridiculous if the agricultural sectors of any given country had decided to make a movie or television series to boost sales of their produce. » There is an epigram: "The taste of food may not be as important as the atmosphere and the atmosphere may not be as important as your dining companions." I do not know where this first came from, but I agree that sometimes the great taste of food is useless if you are not in a good mood. Moreover, an ordinary dish becomes an impressive meal if you're with good company.

» The world of travel has changed tremendously because of technology, especially with the help of a smartphone. One no longer reads travel magazines or guidebooks to collect information on a holiday destination. Travel guidebooks have been outnumbered by hundreds or thousands of travel reviews online, and booking hotels no longer means making long-distance phone calls.

    High-speed trains? Keep dreaming

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 24/06/2015

» I linger at a railway station, waiting for the train. Half an hour before, I was in a super-rush. According to the timetable, the train I was scheduled to catch should be about to arrive. From the hotel, I told a motorcycle taxi driver to go fast so I wouldn't miss this train.

Discovering new things on old routes

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 22/05/2015

» Driving in Thailand has become easier these days with better roads, a wider road network, more gas stations, smarter GPS and faster cars. Though these factors make any roadtrip easier, it doesn't stop people from getting lost. In other words, it doesn't rob them of all the joy of adventure.
