Are you sure you're in the right job?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/05/2017

» Following last week's column on the perils of picking mushrooms, I received an email from a professional mushroomologist. I thought he might embark on heroic tales from the forests and how to avoid poisonous varieties of fungi. However, his advice was quite blunt. He admitted the mushrooms he consumes "have to come wrapped in cling film in an environmentally unfriendly polystyrene carton and from an air-conditioned establishment with a name like Sainsbury's, Tesco's, Waitrose etc".

» My thanks to former colleague Alan Dawson for alerting me to a scene from the Clint Eastwood film Sudden Impact which may throw some light on the hot dog and ketchup debate which featured in last week's column.

Full of beans, but feeling a bit guilty

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 21/03/2021

» With all the tasty food available in Thailand it might seem to be sacrilege that on occasions I am partial to tucking into a bland plate of baked beans on toast. » This week the Bangkok Governor bravely announced that the tangled mess of overhead telecom and broadcast cables which have decorated Bangkok's streets for so long, will definitely be gone within two years. One suspects this might make him a leading candidate for the new post of Minister of Wishful Thinking.

At least the Lady Plods put on a happy face

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/09/2018

» There have been understandable mumblings following the announcement that the Royal Police Cadet Academy would no longer be recruiting females, scrapping the normal 280 places available for the ladies. The explanation, in which we were assured the move would not affect the number of women in the police force, was something of a head-scratcher and had a definite "Catch-22" feel about it, which is probably exactly what was intended.

It doesn’t cost anything to be polite

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 23/11/2014

» It was intriguing to see that the Thai embassy in Tokyo has published a 10-point manners guide for Thai tourists in Japan. Apparently the behaviour by some tourists is frowned upon by the Japanese, known for their good manners.
