Breaking news: Pattaya to be 'livable'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/06/2018

» Most encouraging news of the week came on Wednesday when authorities announced a crackdown on crime in Pattaya which will finally make the city "livable". The somewhat quaintly named "Operation rooting out crime for a livable city" is admittedly a bit of a mouthful and we can only wish the boys in brown the best of luck. I mean, where do they start?

Good night, gentlemen, and good sailing

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/02/2017

» In a recent PostScript featuring BBC Radio's Desert Island Discs, one of the more obscure record requests mentioned came from Dame Judi Dench, who asked for an excerpt from the daily Shipping Forecast, saying she liked the "romantic names".

There must be something about Hawaii

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/10/2016

» The most reassuring news of the week was that the leader of a much-discussed Thai delegation to the US-Asean conference in Hawaii only ate noodles and rice aboard the chartered aircraft.

Off to the pub for a British history lesson

» As a kid, I was fascinated by the name of a pub near my grandmother's home in Farnborough, Hampshire.

Beware those naughty days of the week

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 31/05/2015

» There was an item in the Bangkok Post on Wednesday featuring a sign attached to a tent that read in Thai, “Rawang sao” (beware of the pole). Below it, someone had helpfully written an English translation, or rather mistranslation, which read “Beware Saturday”.

A new look, but did anybody tell the cabbies?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/01/2015

» Returning to Suvarnabhumi airport from the Northeast last Sunday, I decided to try out the new-look taxi system with the impressive-sounding “automatic queue-card kiosks”, rather than my normal practice of sneaking up to the fourth floor and grabbing a taxi from outside the departure lounge.

Hello Dolly ... back where you belong

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/07/2014

» It was good to see Dolly Parton receive such an enthusiastic reception from the 150,000-strong crowd at the muddy Glastonbury festival last weekend. I am not a huge fan of country music, but have always appreciated Dolly as an entertainer and songwriter. I much preferred her own low-key version of I Will Always Love You, which she wrote, to Whitney Houston’s massive hit.

Nice base, a shame about the submarines

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/10/2013

» Last weekend, it was announced that a spanking new submarine base would open at Sattahip next March. This is wonderful news and would be even more wonderful if Thailand actually had any submarines. Still, it is a step in the right direction for a navy that hasn't had an operational sub since 1951.

And now, a good hand for the losers

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/03/2013

» It seems only fair to pay tribute to the 24 candidates that didn't quite make it at last week's Big Mango election. Lest we forget, for months these people acted above and beyond the call of duty in the name of democracy, sweating their way around Bangkok's steamy streets, sporting those fixed grins so beloved by politicians.

    Taxis' long, winding road

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/09/2012

» In an attempt to resolve the problem of Bangkok taxi drivers who refuse to take passengers, the authorities have announced there will be 1,000 baht fines for uncooperative cabbies. All the passenger has to do if a driver refuses to go anywhere is to remember the licence plate number, the colours of the taxi and the driver's appearance or take a photo or record a video clip.
