Wiggles should be seen and not heard

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/10/2015

» An expression I’ve heard with increasing frequency on international television newscasts lately is “wiggle room”. It is often used in reports about international talks or negotiations, suggesting there may be room for manoeuvre.

Facing the music on a desert island

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/02/2017

» The daily news is so depressing it is time for a bit of unabashed escapism. Last weekend marked the 75th anniversary of Desert Island Discs, one of BBC Radio's most iconic programmes. The format involves celebrities being interviewed about their life and selecting eight records if castaway on a desert island. Each guest is allowed a book of their choice and an inanimate luxury.

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/04/2017

» It won't come as any surprise that US President Donald Trump, who frequently criticised his predecessor for spending too much time playing golf, has been a regular sight on the links since he came to power.

All it took was a raised eyebrow or two

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 04/06/2017

The monk, the Kama Sutra and the 8.29

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 23/07/2017

» In PostScript two weeks ago I alluded to having a brief encounter with Smirnoff vodka during a visit to Moscow in 1977. News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/11/2018

» It is generally agreed that a snappy title helps the sales of a book, although some can be a real turnoff. With this in mind, for 40 years the English literary magazine Bookseller, has been holding an annual award for the oddest book title. Also known as the Diagram Prize, last year's winner was the enthralling The Commuter Pig Keeper which just edged out the thought-provoking Nipples on My Knee.

» Just as most Brits must be sick to death of ever hearing the word Brexit, across the Pond one suspects the majority of Americans have also had more than their fill of The Wall. You can't escape those dreaded words even here in Thailand. Switch on the satellite news and you will be bombarded by the two topics, analysed by every expert in the world, most of whom happen to have just written a book on the subject.

Sometimes you just have to walk away

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 03/03/2019

» The Hanoi summit may not have gone quite as smoothly as planned, but I'll leave that for the experts to dissect. One suspects the expression "sometimes you have to walk" will be widely featured in forthcoming panel discussions. Nonetheless, the summit did have its entertaining moments.
