Stop cheating flood victims

News, Published on 18/02/2012

» After repeatedly expressing her concern for the plight of those whose homes and livelihoods were ruined by last year's great flood, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has understandably moved on. The focus now is on the huge and costly infrastructure projects, so beloved by politicians, which are supposed to stop such a calamity from recurring. But, in the rush to launch these new schemes, let us not forget that there are still those who are struggling to put their lives back together after the ravages of nature were compounded by shabby treatment from the government and private sector.

Neighbours to the west get closer

News, Published on 28/02/2012

» Myanmar's ongoing democratic and economic transition has created an unprecedented opportunity for India and Thailand to cooperate and strengthen economic links between South and Southeast Asia. Even more symbolic was that the premier's visit to New Delhi overlapped with that of Myanmar Foreign Minister Wanna Maung Lwin, who came to discuss progress on economic and security relations and extended an invitation to India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit his country.

Life, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 04/06/2012

» It's been a while since I've been to the beach, and so a visit to Hat Nang Rong in Sattahip was a pleasant experience for me. After the high rise condominiums, modern shopping complexes and ladyboys of Pattaya, it was a relief to find a beach that was pristine, with clear blue water, white sand and no mushroom umbrellas and 50 baht beach chairs, or even somtam vendors at that.

Easy to bounce around with our tax money

News, Saritdet Marukatat, Published on 12/11/2012

» The odd surprise or two from politicians really do make Thailand look like a country where there's never a dull moment. The sad thing, though, is that those surprises always end up with taxpayers' money being washed down the drain.

In courthouse kerfuffle, hubris reigns supreme

News, Ploenpote Atthakor, Published on 14/12/2012

» If you still don't know this, it's about time you did: We are losing the old Supreme Court building, a vintage structure that is part of our national heritage. It is being quietly demolished.

Courthouse death sentence

News, Ploenpote Atthakor, Published on 26/12/2012

» A high-profile dispute over the old Supreme Court building has reached a dead end. The Supreme Court staunchly insists it has the right to continue with its plan to replace the ageing structure with a new, much bigger office, citing a cabinet resolution it acquired in 1988, but the Fine Arts Department and a group of conservationists want to keep the old building for a simple reason _ it is national heritage.
