    Family in focus

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 03/02/2023

» The Oscars is coming up soon. And while it should be an exciting time for any film lover, I can't help but feel a bit let down by this year's nominations, especially for the Best Picture category. I didn't particularly like the flashy biopic Elvis and I personally thought Everything Everywhere All At Once was way, way overrated. And I have no clue how Top Gun: Maverick managed to get nominated for best movie of the year. So I had kind of lost interest in this year's awards -- until I recently had a chance to watch another nominee, The Fabelmans, the latest film by Steven Spielberg. Suddenly my interest returned.

» British actor Bill Nighy was trying to describe how he prepared for his character in the new drama Living. He plays Mr Williams, a buttoned-up, almost catatonically reticent bureaucrat in post-World War II London who, upon learning that he is dying, decides finally to live.

Sports, Nobby Piles, Published on 11/04/2020

Horror film does double duty as social satire

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 07/04/2017

» Hot on the trail of the Oscar-winning Moonlight and half-a-century after Katherine Hepburn gasped at her daughter's black fiancée in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, here comes Get Out, a "social thriller" about a black man trapped in a white horror. These weird white folk voted for President Obama -- they keep repeating that to assure themselves and others -- but their exaggerated civility is more creepy and menacing than ever in Trump-ruled America.

Top 10 movies led by Moonlight, La La Land

    Life, Published on 19/12/2016

» [1] Moonlight. The life of Chiron, the young man who grows up in three distinct chapters in Barry Jenkins' masterpiece, is hard and full of pain. And yet Moonlight is so abundant with transcendent moments of grace and lyrical splendour. In the film's blue-tinged darkness shines a tortured soul, one of the most intimately and fully realised ones I can remember encountering in a movie.

    Edge of darkness

Life, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 18/08/2014

» Among the disasters the world had to face this past week — plane crashes, mudslides, building collapses, disease outbreaks, wars — the one that struck a chord with me most was the death of actor and comedian Robin Williams.
