LIFE

State of influx

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 24/06/2013

» Like unstoppable waves, they keep coming in millions. This may be one of the largest outbound human movements, albeit temporarily, in recent history as Chinese are touring the world en masse. The phenomenon is sure to continue in the years to come.

OPINION

Are we losing our last saving grace?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 01/10/2013

» As Thailand creates itself a new low in practically every segment of society (whether it be education or economy), I can no longer rest assured that the saving grace of our nation _ the service-mindedness and tourism industry related to five-star hotels _ will continue to be our pride, and something Thais can change the subject to whenever the conversation heads towards the PM's mispronounced word-of-the-day. My misadventure in a (supposedly) immaculate five-star hotel that most recently mushroomed onto Ratchadamri's landscape took place last Friday _ an example of how we need to look at ourselves long and hard if we still want to make more money from serving people, whether locals or tourists.

Rustic reduction

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 17/01/2014

» If you haven't been living in a social media-free cave, you've probably seen this gorgeous full-blown rustic diner making the rounds on your newsfeed. In fact, the name Karmakamet Diner should ring a bell, as it's the same crew behind the glossy black boxes of Karmakamet aromatherapy products, which first appeared at JJ market.

A perfect pairing

» Two plus two is supposed to equal five — or even six, seven or eight, according to chef Bernd Uber, when tea is paired with food.

Roy: A film to test the patience

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 20/02/2015

» As a movie that takes forever to start and forever to end, glaciers move faster than Roy. Coined as a "romantic thriller", this work of 147 minutes by debut director Vikramjit Singh is anything but and should instead be called a patience tester. Regardless, there's some good in this eye-candy fest too, making it a specimen of what could fit into both the dos and don'ts at film school.

LIFE

For eccentric fashion enthusiasts

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 18/06/2015

» Check in to Sretsis's latest branch at The EmQuartier for a shopping experience that recreates vibes from the brand's first international flagship in Tokyo, Sretsis Inn. Decked out with gold accents, classic striped sofas and dark mahogany, this corner at the Qurator Zone brings you back to hotels of yesteryear, with clothing racks that look like bellboy trolleys and display cases that epitomise revolving doors. Upon entering, you will be greeted by a concierge desk, fully decorated with a classy, wood panelled façade. Mannequins at the revolving doors are wearing the latest and hottest pieces from the collection — the current being "The Runway Rum: Rock-A-Loha Summer Love".  Launched at this branch before all other stores, this summer collection is where Madonna-esque motifs meets Hawaiian frills. Think hot-pink and neon colours, topped with super-loud plastic accessories. Music notes and piano keys are some of the delicate details this season; hemlines are decorated with irresistibly eye-catching bars of notes. The standout zippers, a well-circulated fashion element from the kitschy decade, also scream 80s rock.

LIFE

Filthy rich, and loving it

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 10/08/2015

» Days of back-breaking labour in the desolate boonies, farming for their lives, is a stale cliché concerning the Chinese. Women are no longer under some ring of patriarchal oppression and they contemptuously shun haute couture dresses bedecked with phoenix and dragon embroidery. This is a new and brave China we are talking about -- they are not just crazy rich -- they are China Rich, as Kevin Kwan's second book title aptly coins it.

The wealth of health

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/09/2015

» His words tumble out slowly and at times repetitively, without the groomed articulation that one might expect of a global magnate whose job is also to be the poster boy of his empire. He continuously fiddles with a sugar pot. Up close, he seems wirier than in pictures, and save for the iconic long hair and beard, the 65-year-old Brit on the other side of the table looks nothing like one of the world's most influential billionaires.
