    Exploring different heritages

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 25/05/2022

» Thailand is a country with cultural diversity. The "Red Area And Black Spirit" art exhibition presents two cultures that reflect the differences between two woodcut artists -- Chayasit Orisoon and Warisara Apisampinwong. While Chayasit showcases Song or Tai Dam culture in his "Black Spirit" room, Warisara exhibits Chinese-Thai culture in her "Red Area". Both Chayasit and Warisara are colleagues who earned a master's in visual arts from Silpakorn University. Since their woodcut pieces involve culture, they decided to hold the exhibition together at the People's Gallery, Bangkok Art & Culture Centre.

    A disappearing river

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 24/03/2021

» Artist Disorn Duangdao is one of the many people who has seen the Mekong River in Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai, change from muddy brown to an aquamarine colour. Although the blue river looks beautiful to tourists, it is actually a sign that the river is starving of vital sediment because dams in China are preventing it from flowing downstream. Another negative impact caused by the dam is that the river has dried up so much that the rocks in the bed can be seen for the first time.

    Small things considered

B Magazine, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 23/06/2019

» In much the same way that eyes are said to be the window to the soul, band names give us a glimpse into the collective personality lurking behind each group. And as far as Thai band names are concerned, they can range from prosaic (Solitude Is Bliss, My Life As Ali Thomas) and whimsical (Apartment Khunpa, Charblues, Gym and Swim) to absolutely outlandish (Big Ass, Calories Blah Blah). For Sakon Nakhon-based trio Junlaholaan, names represent a curious juxtaposition where two incongruous concepts (jun, micro, and holaan, enormous) coexist to convey a deeply philosophical message. Yes, we are but a tiny speck in the universe -- the band seems to be saying -- but at the same time, a butterfly in Brazil could also cause a tornado in Texas, couldn't it?

    Revolutionary's road

Life, John Clewley, Published on 02/04/2019

» Poet, novelist, piano player. And that was before Gil Scott-Heron had reached 20. He wrote and recorded his best known song, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, in 1971, and from then on produced a unique and polemical body of prose, poetry and music that led him to be dubbed the "Father of Political Rap", the originator of "nu soul" and many more titles. He preferred being called a "bluesologist".
