In fact, if there is a catalyst for the country's tourism industry to be at the forefront of Asia's travel scene today, it is more or less the government's smart efforts to exploit K-Pop and K-Drama by exporting them across the region and then turning the country into a dreamy destination for those swept up by the ensuing epidemic known as hallyu, or Korean Wave.

Potty mouths and name calling

» When I was born, my first name was just Phat (pronounced Pat). It's still shown on my hospital birth certificate. Not long after I began toddling, however, my mother rushed to the district registration office and asked the officer to add "Duang" to the front of the existing name. So, it became Duangphat -- just like that. Weird name, even for Thai people.
Leading by example

» At 8am on a typical school day, children, wearing their national costumes, line up and sing the Thai national anthem as the Thai flag is hoisted. In class, they study every subject in Thai with Thai teachers. At lunch, they enjoy local food. On Teachers’ Day, alumni revisit their teachers, presenting them with a jasmine garland.
