    The Thai Johnny Cash

Life, Catherine Faulder, Published on 19/01/2016

» Music is Soranut "Beer" Masayavanich's medicine. It heals him. Ten years ago, back when he was an actor for hit sitcom Heng Heng Heng, his name was blasted across the pages of Thai newspapers that made stories out of his attempted suicide.

    On the spot inspiration

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 11/03/2016

» Is it just me or have Sundays become synonymous with: a) almighty hangovers-turned-champagne brunches that result in an even bigger Monday morning headache or b) staying in bed all day because you want to sleep off the tiring week that flew by quicker than you could say, "Dude, where's my double non-fat soy decaf iced vanilla gingerbread frappuccino?"

    The million dollar blogger

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 03/06/2016

» In case you didn't know, there are 197 countries in the world. And Johnny Ward has now visited 193 of them. Guru was lucky enough to meet the Irishman, a hugely successful and famous travel blogger (www.onestep4ward.com), whose mission for the last 10 years has been to visit every country, while making millions and never working a 9-5.

    Sweet, savoured flower power

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 15/07/2016

» If Cath Kidston opened a cafe and it had a Bangkok branch, this would probably be it. Flavors Cafe, a little darling of an eatery, opened up seven months ago on Thong Lor 20 right opposite the Cheesecake House & Restaurant. The cool grey walls, the Grecian arched windows, the flowered décor and the cute little garden out back make you feel as if you're sitting in a frightfully English country cottage. And the food's going for the uber home-cooked feel too.

    The commons misconception

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 29/07/2016

» We spend enough time at The Commons as it is so we thought it would be worthwhile dividing our time there up a bit. Eating waffles and drinking wine after all does get a bit boring. So we did something pretty risqué. Instead of heading to Beer Cap, we decided to climb all the way to the (almost) top of The Commons. #pushingtheboatoutguys. Low and behold, we found Absolute You, another franchise of the Absolute Yoga empire that has been bending Bangkokians into all sorts of questionable positions since 2002.

    Pattaya delights in Bangkok

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 16/09/2016

» Devarana Spa is offering a new "creative spa retreat" package, Pattaya Delight, consisting of little elements that remind us of the unique seaside town not too far from Bangkok. We know, of all the places one could pick to base a two-hour spa treatment on, we also wondered why the high end hotel spa decided to choose Pattaya as a source for its inspiration. Before entering the room, you are offered a welcome drink to calm and cool yourself from the Bangkok heat -- some hibiscus juice or nam krajiab. We had two cups of the stuff it was so good.

    From nightclubs to nature

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 18/11/2016

» As Bangkok's nightclubs cool down on their opening hours and the weather follows suit with cooler and more bearable temperatures, the urge to spend time in nature has grown. Call us crazy but there's something so soothing about spending time immersed in greenery, inhaling nothing but oxygen and the smell of real earth, instead of that foul drain smell Bangkokians have become accustomed to. Wasn't it amid such greenery, in a forest not so far away that the Lord Buddha found enlightenment? OK, we're not suggesting you escape the city life to reach nirvana or anything. Unless of course, you want to. But, it's good to know that a lot of peace and tranquillity can come from just sitting still and, without sounding too cheesy, taking in the beauty and wonder that is nature.

    Coffee, my lord?

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 02/12/2016

» We thought it would be worthwhile checking out the second branch of the slowly expanding Lord of Coffee empire. FYI, there are Lord of Coffee, Lord of Coffeehouse and Lord of Coffee Hideout. My Lord, maybe soon Bangkok will be heading straight back to feudal times. At least we'll have coffee!

You're working with it. You're working on it. You're loving it. You're hating it. You're married to it. You're addicted to it. You're everything to it.

Because at Mystic Valley, there's a stage for everyone. So long as you're into electronic music, or hip hop, that is. If you're into country, best to leave this one out sweetheart.
