Lebanon quickly sinking in more ways than one

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 21/10/2021

» Off the Lebanese coast about 60 kilometres north of Beirut a 104-metre battleship stands vertically, with her bow and some 30 metres of her length plunged into the mud. The seabed is 140 metres down, but you can even scuba-dive on the stern if you are a technical diver. The ship is a bit like Lebanon, for reasons I'll explain later.

A lovely bunch of coconuts and all that

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/07/2020

» The humble coconut (ma prow) has been in the news lately following allegations of abuse of Thai monkeys used in harvesting the fruit. I admit to not being familiar enough with the training of the monkeys to know if they are maltreated as alleged and certainly would not endorse any cruelty. But if they are treated well it shouldn't be a problem. On sporadic visits to the South I've seen the monkeys at work and play, and they appeared to be quite happy scampering up the coconut palms. They certainly have more fun than those used in medical research.

Always look on the bright side of life

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/04/2020

» In difficult times like this it is always a bit tricky writing a light-hearted column supposedly of a jocular nature, although admittedly often failing in that respect. But we have plenty of writers to handle the serious stuff, so PostScript will battle on regardless, albeit in a slightly subdued fashion.

    Thailand must release al-Araibi

    News, Published on 11/01/2019

» Every year, Thailand welcomes thousands of newlyweds on tourism packages, promising a once in a lifetime experience. Little did a Pascoe Vale Football Club player and former Bahrain national team member Hakeem al-Araibi and his bride realise when they left Melbourne on their honeymoon that Thailand would send a squad of police to arrest him as he got off the plane and threaten to send him to Bahrain, where he faces torture and wrongful imprisonment.

    Many gates, no bars

    Oped, Postbag, Published on 10/02/2018

» Let’s see now. First there was watchgate, then we had copgate and now we have poachgate. Will the gates ever stop? No. Because this is amazing Thailand and we all know the elites don’t do jail time.

Why 1967 wasn't just about the Beatles

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/06/2017

» While writing about the 50th anniversary of Sgt Pepper a fortnight ago, it soon became apparent that 1967 was quite a remarkable year for a whole host of reasons aside from the Lonely Hearts Club Band. A quick glance at what was going on in 1967 might evoke a few memories among fellow wrinklies.

Recalling those thrilling days of yesteryear

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/07/2013

» Ancient enough to have been brought up on the original Lone Ranger series on black and white television in the 1950s, I couldn't resist sneaking down to the cinema this week to see how they approach "those thrilling tales of yesteryear" a scary six decades later.

    Postbag: 'Henry' Dunant, maybe?

    News, Published on 03/05/2013

» The Thai Red Cross Society should have reacted earlier than this to Andrew Biggs' entertaining "Where the streets have strange names" (Brunch, April 21).
