Moto loses its mojo

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 27/12/2017

» After last year's delightful Moto Z modular phone, one of the more interesting models in its price-range, it's a wonder why Motorola even bothered to release something like the Moto X4 this year. With middling specs across the board and no real notable feature to talk about, the Moto X4 is yet another mid-range Android phone, one among countless thousands already on the market today.

Streaming service HOOQ seeks filmmakers

» While more and more Asian viewers are tuning in to watch Asian content, many filmmakers in the region are still loathe to enter their local markets, where conservative, broadcast-oriented programming dominates the wavelengths. In Thailand, TV shows centre on the age-old soap opera format, while films are still largely limited to the trinity of horror, comedy and romance, be it from conservative studio execs to stringent cultural and regulatory measures that limit the freedom of creators to push the envelope.

» The 2022 Asian Games, set to be held in Hangzhou, China, will be the first to feature professional competitive video gaming -- more colloquially known as "e-sports" -- as an official medal event. It's a huge boost to the industry's credibility, heralding a new age of mainstream acceptance for digital sporting as something akin, if not similar, to traditional sport.

Dawn of a gaming dream

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 01/03/2017

» Much as it is with movies, it's increasingly rare these days for a wholly original video game -- one that's not a sequel, prequel, spin-off or remake/remastering of an existing game -- to find recognition in a market overflowing with familiar, tried-and-true rehashes of popular products. Horizon Zero Dawn, the latest Action-RPG from PlayStation-exclusive developer Guerrilla Games, is one such rarity, a wholly original game that deserves the highest praise for its gorgeous, meticulously-realised world and ambitious story, dealing with such themes as creation and artificial intelligence, even if much of its gameplay is admittedly derivative of many open-world games before it.

The wisdom of crowds

» Many will agree, having an idea isn't nearly as difficult as executing it effectively. Too often, good ideas are left to fade into obscurity simply because the people behind them lack the monetary or logistical support to properly turn their visions into reality -- whether it be for a product or a cause. In order to make sure these creative ideas and solutions get the chance they deserve, a group of artists and entrepreneurs have come together to create Asiola, a crowdfunding platform focusing on bringing people together in support of innovative ideas and social change.

The ultimate anti-hero

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 12/02/2016

» From the very opening minutes of the film, it is made abundantly clear that Deadpool -- a character in the latest among Marvel's long slate of upcoming superhero films -- is not like any other superhero. While most other superheroes would be wracked with guilt from killing even a bad guy, Deadpool maims, beheads, dismembers and even disembowels them with joy, sprouting jokes without skipping a beat. He's weird, crass, violent and even downright sadistic in all the best ways, and that is exactly why he is such a joy to see in action, even if the film around him is only average at best.

A step towards literary freedom

» Myanmar’s recent general election is a joyous moment for the people of the country, who have been ruled by a military dictatorship since the early 1960s. For poet and publicist Myay Hmone Lwin the election results, which look set to improve the situation through the victory of the National League for Democracy, paints a hopeful picture for his country’s future, hopefully a future free from rampant censorship and piracy, as well as a chance for Myanmar to make itself known on an international level.
