Time to repeal retirement law

Toyota Motor Thailand vice-chairman Ninnart Chaithirapinyo told a seminar on Thai labour that it is time to raise the retirement age from its current 60, to 63 or 65. While Mr Ninnart was addressing a specific problem of a labour shortage, he is right. The demographics of Thailand have changed considerably in recent decades, and the law should be changed to recognise this.

» Last Saturday, a large rally of around 45,000 red shirts at Ratchaprasong intersection marked the 2010 military crackdown that left 91 dead. The gathering sent a strong message, a call for a national reconciliation. If such a thing is possible, it will greatly benefit the country's long term peace. It will certainly be a "change for the better." But it would need ample time and many sacrifices from all parties.
