Anonymous commented : Ian. I have just spent three years in Perth and I do not agree that Australia is very much more developed than Thailand. Thailand has far superior hospitals, better eqipped and staffed, better hotels, much better restaurants and food, far better security, a better road system. Cleaner food handling in many eating places. a better quality of life etc, etc. I have lived a total of 25 years in Thailand, I leave things in the back of my pickup, I leave my boat anchored unattended on the beach, I,ve never been robbed. In Perth my house was broken into three times, my car 4 times and my boat stolen. My 15 year old daughter could not go out alone after 6.pm Australia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, the highest gambling and the second juvenile delinquancy rate in the developed world. It laso has many supporters of racist Pauline Hanson. I hope Thailand never develops into any thing like Australia

fred23 commented : I think underlying a lot of the Westerners' resentment towards the sin sot system and Thai people seeing Farang as "cash cows" is the misconception that we, as Westerners, deserve our place in the global economy, and they, as Thais, deserve theirs. I understand that we work hard for our money, but there are many people in Thailand who work a lot harder for a whole lot less money because that's just the way that the deck is stacked in the global economy. It is a lot easier for us to get ahead, and it is very difficult for many Thais, hence the amount of people that enter degrading occupations such as prostitution and grueling factory work. While everyone has to draw the line somewhere, I think it is perfectly appropriate for Westerners to share what they can with their in-laws and even their in-laws' neighbors to the best of their ability. I'm happily married to a Thai woman and, although her family almost never asks for money, I am more than happy to give them what I can because they are sweet people, always treat me well, and work as hard as I do, despite not having as much money to show for it. If you are worried about your money being squandered on booze and gambling, I think it is appropriate to treat the money that you give people as investments, rather than handouts. For example, tell your brother in law that you'll buy him a tractor that he can use to earn future income by plowing his neighbors fields, and that he can pay you back in small installments over a long period of time. I guess my main point is that the fruits of the opportunities that Westerners are born into should be shared with people who were not so fortunate, particularly where those people are friends and family. This kind of attitude will make life more pleasant for everyone.

wilko commented : Personal experience is really not a valid argument here. What I'm trying to point out is that health care in Thailand is a lottery. You MAY get what you consider to be reasonable care - most people actually don't have enough medical knowledge to know if the care they had was the most appropriate for the problem - but they emerge from hospital "better" and thankful. hospitals know that patients can be very grateful - even when they have received the wrong treatment - they're happy to be out and alive. comparing with other countries. monitoring and regulation of Heath care in Thailand is virtually non-existent so figures are conveniently not available. Hospitals resort to their own studies and personal recommendations. They use ads in papers whose language reminds one of those "snake-oil" ads in the back of the Sunday tabloids. they use the patients fears and ignorance to generate new business. USA - has possibly one of the worst health care systems in the "developed" world - BUT if you are treated incorrectly by a Doctor or institution you CAN resort to litigation AND you may well get a result. THIS IS NOT SO in Thailand. there is little or no comeback for the patient. so you don't have any INSURANCE is this respect - you are gambling all or nothing. I know of serious misconduct by medical people all over the world - it happens - but in Thailand I've come across examples of absolutely inexcusable malpractice, negligence and just plain ignorance by Doctors and other staff - and it looks to be of a frequency tat is way higher than most western countries......and this is the rub - THERE IS NO COMEBACK! If you are thinking of using the Thai health care system -think carefully - what will you do if - or when - something goes wrong.

Anonymous commented : Falong, you are looking things a little bit to negative. After 30 years of marriage I had also different experiences. I know many Thai women who have confidence in themselves. There are successful Thai women in life and professional career. But this successful women don't hang around in the local Thai circles. Most local circles of Thai women are pure poison. After more than 30 years in Europe my wife did learn this in the the hard way. She only left a few very good Thai friends, with the rest of the Thai community she keep a distance. Our friends don't go to Thai party's or celebrations. It took years before my wife opened her mouth about the reason why, and even now after 30 years of marriage I don't know everything what is going on there. And its better that way, because its a story of cheating, lying, masquerade, borrowing, gambling and debt to each other. Take for instance the system of share money, where Thai women put every month a certain amount of money in a pot, they make a bid to get it. Many women make a bidding at the beginning, but than don't pay anymore the following contributions. I know several Thai women who have a gambling debt of several thousands Euro's, one even 20 000 Euro, without the knowledge of her husband. You gave the good advise to consult an elder Thai woman. But also here have to take caution. And its not always the ones, who visit the temples or pray every day who are the most reliable persons. paraphrasing and old saying " you can take a lady out of Thailand, but not Thailand out of the woman" The best advise I can give is listen, listen, listen and listen to your wife and try to understand what makes her ticks, and waiting till she trust you for the full 100%. Its important to know that a woman and certainly a Thai woman think very different than we do. Just except this difference. They don't want to have solutions they only want a listening ear for what they see as major problems. And never pas judgement over her opinion, her friends or family. If you don't do so, she will not tell you anything about them again. Lets she make up her own mind about them, you can only carefully and gently guide her. Stimulate her to become a free independent self confident woman. Except that she is not a minor who is under your control., but an equal partner, who choose to be your partner, because she wants to, not because she needs to depending on you. When you overcome this problems you will have a trustful and honest partner who you can depend on what ever problems you will encounter in your life. Because behind that polite and modest Thai behaviour their is a very strong woman hidden. Its up to you to discover this jewel. But I can guarantee, if you get the trust of this strong minded woman, you will have the partner of your dreams. But stay away from the poisoning circles of the local Thai women. You just don't put the cat nearby the milk.

PettyTyrant commented : [quote="kngdady":34z54gs2]One way to make money for the country is to establish a gaming zone such as Phuket or in a resort area. I believe most countries have some form of gambling from hourse races to lotterys. The money brought in through gaming can help fund a varity of projects such as education, improving infastructure and employing more people. I believe these gaming zones would bring in more tourist along with more money. I have lived in Las Vegas for the last 58 years and seen it grow from 60,000 people to 1.8 million. The number of tourist that come to Las Vegas averages between 38million to 40 million a year. I believe Thailand as a whole had 18 million visitors last year and I am one of those every year.[/quote:34z54gs2] Can't even get Chang beer listed on the SET..how would anyone ever get a legitimate casino here? it is OK if it remains underground and illegal...like the other vices... that way, a Buddhists country with Buddhist values can be comfortable in denying that vices are part of the culture... just like other cultures with theocratic influence... <cryptic implication follows> Question: How many legs does a dog have if you call its tail a leg? Answer: 4 legs... Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.
