» Since my childhood, I have loved all kinds of animals except snakes, rats and cockroaches. I have had several dogs and a cat as pets. I was bitten once by a temple cat, once by my own cat and several times by my dogs because I accidentally frightened them. However, the weirdest experience was being bitten by a monkey on Khao Wang, or Phra Nakhon Khiri, a mountain palace museum in Phetchaburi, over a year ago. When I was a teenager, I was once surrounded by monkeys who tried to steal my handbag at Phra Kan Shrine in Lop Buri.

Established more than two decades ago, the Thai Press Museum is a great place to discover the evolution of journalism in Thailand and changes to the publishing industry in Thailand. Also on-site are old newspapers, old printing equipment and tools.

» Under beautifully decorated gold lacquered parasols called tee kham were more than 30 boys donned in ancient-style Myanmar apparel and a crown being carried on the shoulders of their male relatives. They were part of a procession of hundreds of people wearing traditional Shan clothes, playing music, dancing or carrying thaiyathan (necessary things for monks). The atmosphere was lively and cheerful as the boys were about to enter monkhood in a Poi Sang Long ceremony at a temple in Mae Hong Son's Pai district.

Temple tourism resurges after flood

» At weekends, Wat Phananchoeng Worawihan in Ayutthaya province is still crowded with Thai and foreign worshippers and tourists all day after last year's big flood. Hundreds of people were spotted paying respect to the presiding Buddha statue, Phra Buddhatrairattananayok, during the half an hour we spent there on a recent trip. The situation was similar at eight other temples in Ayutthaya and two neighbouring provinces we visited. Visiting temples in flood-hit areas is an opportunity for us to learn how many temples coped with the disaster and why a few were spared by the floodwater.
