While the big multiplex release of the year is likely to be Fanday, the first output from GDH 559 (previously GTH) slated for Sept 1, some Thai indie titles are busily injecting necessary edge and provocation to the scene.

» There's the anatomy -- the bone and the flesh, supple or flaccid. Then there's time, the cruellest judge of all. In Jakrawal Nilthamrong's Anatomy Of Time (the Thai title is simpler, Wela), the first sound we hear is a tick-tock metronome like the soundtrack of the cosmos as we watch an old lady gently tending to her tubed and bedbound husband. Time will be folded back. The old woman will become young and her dying husband will appear as a spirited, dashing military captain fighting communist insurgents for the good of the nation.

» Under oppressive regimes, artists are often forced to turn true stories into metaphors or disguise them in the stories of others to escape censorship, or much worse fates. The atmosphere of fear and the sense of stagnation perpetuated by such rule can have such insidious effects that the practice of wrapping true stories in the safe veil of the cryptic sometimes crosses into self-censorship and becomes habit-forming.

» Theatre artists from 17 productions were nominated this year for the IATC Thailand Dance and Theatre Review, which took place on Tuesday at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). Now in its fifth year, the ceremony is hosted by the International Association of Theatre Critics Thailand Center. The casual and intimate event honours plays, musicals, and movement-based productions by artists residing in Thailand.
