LIFE

A show of strength

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/09/2022

» Over the past few years, American superheroes have dominated the movies in cinemas and series on various streaming services. That is likely to continue since Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe consists of planned releases in 2023 and 2024, while DC Extended Universe also has at least five films to be released next year. Last month, a reboot of the Red Eagle, perhaps Thailand's best-known superhero, was also announced for a planned release in 2024. Guru thinks home-grown heroes need long overdue love from us, so here are some of the memorable ones for your reading pleasure.

A Uniformed Presence

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 11/01/2019

» Should schools still impose uniform on students? Earlier this week, pictures of students at Bangkok Christian College wearing their choices of attire to school were widely spread online. Kudos to the school for trying out a new approach to encourage student creativity and self-expression. Special shout out to the boy who wore Rillakuma onesie and the other one with a turban.

The road to redemption

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/09/2018

» Akkarin "Rung" Puri spent almost half of his life behind bars. Instead of hiding his dark past, he's open about his ex-inmate status and uses it to inspire convicts to change their way and campaign for understanding and, more importantly, second chance for them to be part of society again. A guitar maker (Be Light Guitar; fb.com/belightguitar) and speaker at prisons, Rung talked to us about his long road to redemption.

A funny stranger in her own home

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/07/2017

» Unpleasant experiences can be a source for comedy. That seems to be the case for Simiran "Simi" Srinarula, a 20-year old student studying Media & Communications at Macquarie University in Sydney. Simi combines her experience as a Thai-Indian and her wittiness into funny skits. Her Facebook and YouTube handle Kaek Kee Kui (fb.com/kaekkeekui) — which unofficially translates to talkative Thai Indians — is where you can find some funny sketches that she has done all by herself. Simi manages to poke fun at things she has experienced in Thai society as a Thai of Indian descent, while slipping in an important message here and there. One video where she made fun of questions that she got asked as a Thai-Indian recently went viral and earned her some media attention. There is some strong language in her videos but we think they are funny and definitely worth checking out.

LIFE

Like the old days

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 14/11/2014

» While fusing elements of Thai and other cuisines seem to be the norm of many restaurants these days (and there's nothing wrong with that), a new place called Yang Kao Kon chooses to stay faithful to recipes from the old days. This Thai restaurant is part of Frank & Release futsal field and has two levels. The indoor dining room on the first floor looks bland except for a few wooden cabinets filled with old stuff. There isn't much of a view through the tall windows unless you consider men kicking balls in a field to be a visual feast. The upper level offers outdoor dining with a view of the neighbours' roofs and antennae. You can tell from its look that Yang Kao Kon isn't the kind of place to go for a date (unless you two are on the 50th date) but should befit a low-key traditional meal. Their customers include futsal guys and white-collars in the area. Being a ma-and-pa place, their menu lists all dishes in Thai and without the accompaniment of saliva-inducing descriptions, but that doesn't mean their food is plain.
