An ode to the service industry
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 10/01/2010
» This is a column for my Thai readers only. That's because I want to teach them a lesson about their service staff. I want to make a complaint and I want Thais to sit up and take notice. Simply put ... what on earth has happened to good ol' service these days? I'm talking about restaurants.

Cracking good time
Database, Published on 13/01/2010
» German tech nerd Karsten Nohl showed off at the Chaos Communication Conference in Berlin how he cracked the encryption that you were trusting to keep your phone calls un-tappable throughout Thailand; the researcher proved it would be pretty simple to crack any GSM encryption; he said the 20-year-old encryption algorithm used by most GSM companies is simply too weak, and can be cracked by anyone who really cares; he released all the data, cracking tables and instructions, but did not give away an actual cracking program, because that might be illegal.

A small price to pay
Database, Published on 20/01/2010
» Your TOT board put huge red Xs across all the recent auctions and three billion baht worth of contracts to build a fibre-optic network for broadband Internet, and vowed to call new contracts; the decision followed remarks by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva over the high prices of some of the bids, and your TOT will be certain to write new terms of reference for new auctions; the rather complicated auction was run in portions, for various parts of the country, but luckily for TOT turned out to total 3.03 billion baht, a full 0.01 billion below the budget; now they will have to do it all again, and despite what Mr Abhisit says, prices do go up, don't they?

My favourite Valentine's day
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 14/02/2010
» Valentine's Day is special for me - I first came to Thailand on that day in 1989. But there was another Valentine's Day in Thailand that turned out to be the most memorable in my life. It is not the most "sanook" story I have, but I am going to tell it to you anyway.

Plain bloody minded
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 21/03/2010
» Last Tuesday we witnessed the spectacle of a couple of thousand largely under-educated, but probably very nice, country folk spatter their blood at the gates to Parliament House. A Brahmin priest dressed in unflattering white danced and chanted and painted evil curses in blood on the four corners of the House. As the sun went down the red shirts went back to their camping ground at the Royal Plaza, and I went home wondering if they were remaking Monty Python here in Thailand.

The dark side of Thailand
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 28/03/2010
» There is an ad on Thai TV at the moment for a product that whitens your armpits. That's right. Your armpits. That's all; nothing else. You think I'm joking, but I'm not. It's an ad for a roll-on deodorant, but the main thing is not that you smell nice. Rather, your underarms will be white.

A Gem of a story
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 04/04/2010
» The recent decision to close down Sanam Luang for renovations has sent me on a trip down memory lane, reminding me of a day when I went there deliberately to get ripped off. Sanam Luang is the last remaining large tract of land in central Bangkok that hasn't been cemented over to make way for shophouses selling car parts or cheap cloth which, upon coming into contact with an errant cigarette, quickly introduces you to the perils of self-immolation.

A gem of a story: Part II
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 11/04/2010
» This is part two of an exciting story which started last week on this very page. Normally I have no time for readers who miss a week of this column, but if for some unfathomable reason you did, here is a brief synopsis:

Sweet sounds of success
Learningpost, Published on 18/05/2010
» The custom-made black uniforms with silver and red-glitter sashes and French cuffs were crisply pressed; every shoe was polished to a glean, toes straight and forward, stomachs in, heads up, shoulders back, backs straight, hearts full of pride and faces full of smiles ... .

Edible kitty litter, Viagra & Odourless cat's urine
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 30/05/2010
» One of the first things I become expert at whenever I visit the United States is its television. I have no choice in the matter. Over here in the States I'm awake when I'm asleep in Bangkok, and jetlag thus hits me like a Northeastern truck driver on methamphetamines.
