Keeping the late King's works alive

» Today marks the beginning of the royal funeral ceremonies for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. For me, this is a time when all Thais form collective memories. For over a year, we have been united in showing our love and respect to the late monarch. We are saddened by his passing, humbled by solemn rituals and will be enthralled by all forms of traditional Thai arts during the royal funeral and cremation ceremonies.
An election singing the same old tune

» The harsh public criticism against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his "four questions" gives an impression that people in country look forward to an election. Putting aside the fact that some politicians can be unscrupulous, or there might be a possibility of street demonstrations, it appears people are willing to give democracy a chance. After all, it is my belief that Thais have special relations with democracy.
Forest too precious for housing

» Many years ago I visited Mahachai, a fishery port zone in Samut Sakhon province. As I walked around I felt like I was a township in Myanmar. The community is dubbed Little Myanmar, with good reason. It is a place where you can hear many people talk in unfamiliar dialects, posters are written in the round letters of the Myanmar alphabet, and of course, women and men have yellowish tanaka paste on their faces.
Ajarn Puey was the real khon dee deal

» His life and work was portrayed in a musical and TV documentary series. Leading magazines featured him on their front pages. Stamps bearing his image were released as a tribute to his centennial commemorations. A number of agencies where he used to work organised events in his memory.

» Every party comes to an end. So too does the 2012 London Olympic Games, which arrives at its curtain call on Sunday. At the closing ceremony, all eyes will shift to Rio de Janeiro, the city that will take over the torch. Brazil is another BRIC countries _ a new emerging economy beside China, India and Russia _ that plays host to the Games. (Please stand up India, as I am totally convinced that a New Delhi or Mumbai Summer Olympics will shame London and Beijing.)
