Mr Porter, by the great Marie Lloyd, also fitted the bill. The song tells the tale of a young woman who gets on the wrong train at London. The chorus goes as follows:

» It is, of course, the Jinger Ben season in Thailand, and anyone who hasn't heard that jolly refrain in recent days must have invested in earplugs, not a bad idea in Bangkok. But considering all the depressing news of late, the festive season is actually something of a welcome break before we return to grim reality. And the sight of those lovely department store salesgirls with their reindeer ears and silly Santa hats, always raises the spirits.

A new year and a new experience

» At my age, any new sensation tends to be an ache or a pain, but this year on New Year's Day, I was up and about at six in the morning, which was definitely a new experience. I hasten to add this wasn't because I hadn't made it to bed after a night's revelry. Admittedly in the past there have been occasions when I've seen dawn rise on Jan 1 before hitting the sack. But this was a genuine early rise and shine occasion. Some explanation is needed for this unnatural behaviour.
