Crocheted fruits & happy alpacas

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 02/05/2014

» We’ve come across a brand that sells stuff so cheekily cute we wonder if people who make them are smiling all the time. Our eyes are set on Nahim’s cheery bags that capture colourful fruits and smiling alpacas on its canvases. Owner Chalocha “Pim” Ninthummachart, 25, recently left her full-time marketing job to run her lifestyle brand Nahim after it become more profitable to focus on making and selling her bags.

Are these really the ‘Golden Years’?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 14/04/2014

» Yesterday marked Thailand’s Day of the Elderly, and if Thai customs have conditioned you just right, one of the most disconcerting sights you could possibly witness is of an elderly person still working. Our mentality that we should always care for our parents in old age makes us shudder at the reality of old folks still toiling away to make ends meet.

Farewell fights

» ‘This will all be bulldozed,” said Maj Gen Surakai Chattumart, director of the Army Welfare Department and Lumpini stadium master. “It will become complete emptiness — I guess it does feel a bit like seeing your home destroyed. It’s like losing something, but if it’s for the better, it’s something we should all accept.”

Sweet dreams

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 31/01/2014

» The north side of Siam Paragon's fourth floor used to be a rather dry and vague void, but today it is filled with pastel columns, and a flouncy cloud-like pink net sprawls across the air to create a canopy in an area called Dream Forest. The centre seating area is engulfed in a completely pink, fanciful and jungle-like theme, is enclosed by six different sweet stores on the fourth floor (True Coffee, Fucheer, Royal Sugar, Tart to Tart, Patisserie Masatomi, Cupcake Love) and four more on the fifth (Custard No. 4, Love to Eat, Mister Donut, Chewy Junior). This lovely quiet location exudes a dreamy ambience, away from the bustle of a typical food floor's commotion and frenzy. Browse around to find a menu that rings your bell, pay at their counter and walk back to your seat and wait to be served all this done gloriously service-free. No more days of bickering, because anyone can eat whatever they want from any store. We visit the most attractive setups at this new hive of sweetness.

#Protestday is not supposed to be a #win

» Once upon a decade ago, right around this time of the year, I would stand in front of my house waiting for my school bus to pick me up _ with a jittery unease which only came in the cold season. As the minutes ticked by, my anxiety would escalate exponentially from worries that my scatterbrain bus driver had forgotten to pick me up. But forgetfulness aside, it was completely normal for buses to show up a whole, fat hour late during this month in Europe. If he didn't come, it would be because of a shrill ring from my home telephone and two particularly glorious words to be heard from the other end: "Hi Parisa, today's a snow day."

Daddy dearest

» On an auspicious day like this, I'd really like to steer any thoughts away from politics because, honestly, it is starting to get exhausting trying to keep tabs on how Thaksin Shinawatra is scheming to get back to this country all the time. Let's shift our focus from politicians to _ yellow confetti please _ fathers. I've kept my observant media eye hyper-alert for all dad-related happenings around me lately and while some can be a downer, others are heart-warming.

Leaving their old lives as a technical businessman and nurse in Switzerland behind without any doubts in March last year, thanks to a sense of wanderlust, the couple has travelled through 23 countries, four world religions, and many plateaus and climates after saving for the trip for seven years. Their route on land has led them to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Siberia, Mongolia, Western China, the Himalayas, India, and finally to Southeast Asia.

Cute enough to eat

» We're an appearance-oriented nation and this mindset extends to food; anything that isn't photogenic already loses 50 brownie points, regardless of how it tastes. If you're looking to find some sweets that are even more of a treat to the eyes than the stomach, head down to Pop Me Up Cafe, which opened three months back. After a successful stint selling their custom-made cake-pops online, three friends Jinsupang, Ansaya and Rubkwan have finally given their business a physical and very much pastel-hued outlet where customers can pick up their orders and enjoy freshly made cake-pops in a serene setting with cool drinks in towering glasses. Try their Italian lime apple soda (75 baht) which gives a sour twist to this usually sweet drink.
