Open Sesame Street: why public TV matters

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 17/10/2012

» As I was listening to the presidential debate back on Oct3, I knew Mitt Romney was going to have it bad when he pledged to cut federal funding for public broadcasting. Oh yes, fans of the cuddly creatures from Sesame Street and other shows on PBS, such as documentaries, are sure to start their hate parade. In fact, there is actually going to be one on Nov 3, called the Million Muppet March, when protesters will gather at the National Mall in Washington, DC, to defend PBS and Sesame Street.

Striving for democracy

News, Published on 27/06/2012

» Eighty years, three days and counting. This is how long the country has been "progressing towards democracy". » Alarmed and despondent, readers have sent feedback to me regarding last week's column on the forthcoming demise of the Lido Theatre. For a second, I thought I had struck my Kony moment, though I'd promised I'd never end up the same way as that video-maker who was caught naked, drunk, and allegedly performing al fresco masturbation just days after his socially-conscious campaign had gone viral. Don't let the urge to save the world short-circuit your head, that's the lowdown.

Macaroons or not, devil still in the details

News, Pichai Chuensuksawadi, Published on 06/03/2012

» The last time we had a meal together was over five years ago. Thaksin Shinawatra was still prime minister. The political temperature at the time was high and he announced on April 4, 2006 that he was taking leave. Soon after his return in May, a dinner was arranged for the Post group's senior editors. It was a Chinese dinner at Central, Lat Phrao. It had been a while since we'd had the chance to chat and exchange views with the prime minister and his key ministers. Not long after that, he was ousted in the coup of September 2006.

Terrorism not defined by casualty numbers

News, Published on 17/02/2012

» Re: ''Bombers 'part of terror group','' (BP, Feb 16). Serious questions need to be asked about the suitability of Wichean Potephosree as secretary-general of the National Security Council. The man is obviously in a state of total denial of the realities on the ground.
