True, the glass ceiling in national politics was finally broken when Thailand elected a woman as prime minister for the first time last July. Thailand also boasts one of the highest participation rates in the world for women in senior management (39%), well above the global average of 21% and just 19% for Asia-Pacific companies, according to a survey released yesterday by Grant Thornton consultancy firm.

This is not the time to keep still, when other countries are preparing their children for the Asean Economic Community. Having attended English classes four times a week over a period of 12 years, almost means nothing when we try to help a lost tourist, because of our problem with communicating in English. I hope to see the next generation of Thais busy working in Thailand, not scattered around Asean without a job to do.

She said she felt saddened because Thai people treated one another with contempt and took sexual advantage for personal or political gains. Then she pleaded for cooperation and understanding of the role of women and vowed to restore the honour and dignity of Thai women.
