Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 07/12/2018

» Daily News recently reported that King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang has introduced an astrology course for engineering students as a general study subject, which has been well-received by students. The professors involved insist that it isn't about pure superstition as astrology involves statistics, data collection and calculation.

Ways Thais Can Improve Their English

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/11/2018

» Published earlier this week, the annual report by EF Education First on English proficiency of people in countries that don't use English as their mother tongue revealed Thailand scored 48.54 out of 100. Our English skills are considered "low" (fourth out of five levels) since the first report in 2011 (Ministry of Education, what exactly have you been doing?) The report gauged people's English proficiency by focusing on listening and reading via an online test, and they admitted that the results may be optimistic given that participants have access to internet, thus, potentially excluding your average Somchai and Somsri.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/06/2018

The lighter side of politics

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 30/03/2018

» Amid the deluge of headlines that pop up on my (and perhaps your) smartphone screen, a few manage to catch my attention with their unexpected funniness especially those regarding Thai politics. Some are so ironic, they are jokes. Not sure what I'm getting at? Here are a few examples for your entertainment. After reading too many corruption scandals involving state officials, one just needs a few laughs, y'know.

Giving a fair chance

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/01/2018

» People with special needs may be able to receive education but they haven't been given a fair chance in terms of employment. And that's exactly what Max Simpson wants to change. The 31-year-old educator is the co-founder of Steps with Theera (stepswiththeera.com), a cafe on Ekamai Soi 10 that is staffed by trainees with cognitive disabilities. It also functions as a vocational training centre for them. Through showing what they are capable of, Max hopes, those born with cognitive disabilities will be given more opportunities to work and contribute to society.

Why the morality test is (almost definitely) immoral

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/01/2018

» Recently, the head of the National Institute of Educational Testing Service said a new O-Net test to gauge goodness and community service could be a reality by 2019. This is to ensure Thai kids grow up as decent citizens. As well-intentioned as this plan may be, I think there are several ways such a test could easily go wrong and defeat its very purpose.
