Beam me up!

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 23/08/2019

» Interest in extraterrestrial things (and beings) make a comeback to the Thai collective consciousness, thanks to asteroid 2006 QQ23 flying by and a viral video in which a local man, who claims to be a medium of Pluto God, warns humanity of 2020 doomsday in an alien tongue. This got us thinking about the local interest in UFOs and aliens, and how Thailand is linked to alien stories in a way that you may not be aware of. We aren't saying we believe in Pluto God or trying to convince you one way or another but there are many pieces of evidence (of varying degrees of credibility) of alleged alien visits to the Land Of Smiles and they are too fascinating not to share.

» When you pore over newspapers and news feed as much as I do (but perhaps not in a desperate search to find something to write about), you can come across headlines that stop you between scrolling and tabs saved for their unintentional amusement. Here are a few to leave you scratching your head or make you chuckle away.

Reading Between the Words

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/07/2019

» Sometimes when you read Thai news stories, you may come across certain phrases or words that show up again and again. They are often terms that mask something that's less pleasant or perhaps too blunt to be said outright.

P(l)aying Respect

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/06/2019

» You should be well aware by now of the online brouhaha regarding phan wai khru, pedestal trays with flower arrangement, that come with a creative/political statement. The students usually offer these trays to the teachers as tokens of appreciation and respect on Wan Wai Khru (unofficially translates to Paying-Respect-to-Teachers Day) at schools. And they usually come decked out in a traditional style with specific types of flowers, which have beautiful meanings behind them.

Election Made Easy

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/03/2019

» The general election is this Sunday, baby! Aren't you stoked to be able to exercise your right to vote again after a five-year absence (or eight, if you take into consideration that the 2014 general election was deemed invalid by the Constitutional Court). Anywhoo, it can be overwhelming to digest all the information, campaign videos, memes, pictures of hot candidates and fake news that have flooded your Facebook newsfeed lately. Perhaps, it's best to judge our candidates based on their parties' policies and proposals, and Bangkok Poll on Sunday revealed that 97% of respondents in their latest survey will vote on Mar 24 and more than half said party policies will be the first factor when deciding which candidates to vote for.

Doodler dream

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/02/2019

» They say a picture is worth 1,000 words but perhaps this classic idiom needs an update. Let's go with, "a Line sticker is worth 1,000 words and some cash too if you know how to make them". Mouthful, I know, but read on and all will become clear.

A Uniformed Presence

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 11/01/2019

» Should schools still impose uniform on students? Earlier this week, pictures of students at Bangkok Christian College wearing their choices of attire to school were widely spread online. Kudos to the school for trying out a new approach to encourage student creativity and self-expression. Special shout out to the boy who wore Rillakuma onesie and the other one with a turban.
