The future, left behind

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 19/11/2018

» When private companies are willing to pump a staggering 54 billion baht into a business venture like Iconsiam, just imagine what they are capable of doing to develop the potential of the country's workforce and education for the underprivileged.

Anger management needed to curb youth violence

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 23/05/2016

» Firearms and youth violence has once again consumed innocent lives. It has become a worrisome social ill that continues to sporadically surface from time to time, with no signs of abating. In most cases, it is found that the perpetrators were either on drugs or under the influence. Their vicious acts are either documented on closed-circuit television or put on social media after a witness takes a video clip.

Business fights and disabled rights

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 29/01/2016

» A labour report last week stating that more than 40 local firms were being taken to task by the law for declining to assist the disabled got me concerned over the lack of empathy some entrepreneurs have towards one of the most marginalised groups in society. The report went on to say assets of 44 companies could be foreclosed and sold to raise money, which would go into the Disabled Works Fund because the businesses in question refused to contribute to the fund, set up to raise the quality of life of the disabled in Thailand. The firms were warned to pay up but refused.

Police need image makeover

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 23/10/2015

» The utter mayhem that unfolded a few weeks ago in the vicinity of Phuket's Thalang police station between officers and disgruntled residents who accused them of causing the death of two young drug suspects saw the type of carnage we have not seen in a while.

Stay calm and don't let the bigots win

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 08/04/2015

» Dealing with racism takes a fair amount of patience and emotional maturity. In fact, if done in a calm, cool and collected manner, it can reap long-lasting benefits. An example of this is a story I saw in the news recently of a migrant Indian taxi driver who turned a racist encounter in Darwin, Australia into an opportunity to feed the needy.

OPINION

To tackle rape, we must end gender inequality

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 09/09/2014

» Just when I thought I had heard it all — all the advice drummed into us women about learning how to defend ourselves, the cautions about remembering to dress "appropriately" at all times, never to walk alone in isolated areas and, if out after dark, to always stick to well-lit areas — along comes another measure supposedly meant to prevent us becoming victims of sexual assault: anti-rape nail polish!

OPINION

The well-being of young ones must always come first

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 12/04/2013

» The case of the kindergarten teacher charged with recklessness for allegedly leaving a three-year-old child in a sweltering school van, causing the little girl to slip into a coma, has once again put the teaching profession in the hot seat.

OPINION

A positive change for people of Myanmar

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 12/04/2012

» Myanmar's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi's historic by-election win is also the "victory of the people". Among these citizens are the brave students and civilians that fled their country in the aftermath of the 1988 failed student uprising for democracy, which was brutally crushed by the military junta's iron-fisted rule. Numerous were killed and injured, while many became refugees in neighbouring Thailand.
